Great material!
Then the owner, Brian, came over and reviewed the job. We needed more material and they stayed till the job was done beautifully!
When I asked them to come get the dirt off my parking lot and refund my money I was first blamed for having the dirt for 10 days without complaint (Tuesday - Saturday is 4 days, I called on Monday) and then I was blamed for not covering the dirt to keep the water off and out of it. Nobody told me that I had to cover the dirt to keep it dry (???). Which brings up the question of what would have happened to the same dirt if it was spread on the beds and then it rained? It would still have turned into a lumpy layer of clay pan. I know clay, my mother told me to never "work" clay or it would turn into a hard lump. In addition, the dirt they delivered was full of gravel. At home I opened a bag of topsoil (wet) and when I squeezed and released, it fell apart. There was no "greasy" feeling in my hand like when I squeezed their clay that held its shape and I had a hard time getting it off my hand where it stuck like clay used in throwing pots.
I put the topsoil next to the "dirt" on white paper and took a picture. The difference is clear and obvious. I wish I could post the picture.
OK, so they suggest the motive for my calling them to come get the dirt off my parking lot was "I didnt need it". My landscapers suggested we raise the level of the ground off the parking lot so there wouldnt be a drop off. But because the "fill" that was delivered was so bad my landscapers said it would be better to leave the drop off and not raise the level of the area. Because the workmen were already there I had no time to try and remedy the situation (on a Saturday) and get real topsoil delivered. So I just let them go ahead with rototilling and seeding the area and there is still a drop off the parking area onto the grass. There was no "hole" to fill with the "fill". And the concept that "dirt shouldnt get wet" is ludicrous.
I posted on Craig's list for somebody to come and get this fill. I heard from other people who have had problems with "fill" being sold by several other companies as "topsoil", even from a landscaper who had his truck loaded with this stuff at the distributors and immediately dumped it because the "topsoil" was just screened construction site dirt. So it is apparently a common problem. The only way to get real topsoil is to go to the outfit and take a look at it, wet it, squeeze it in your hand and if it falls apart instead of holding together like clay, then it is topsoil. And unlike me, be there when they come to deliver and do the same check before it is dumped.
"The topsoil was delivered on 4/30/13 to a rental property per (deleted member name). She had called us on Monday 5/16/13 to say the topsoil was not “good” for garden use and that her “guys” refused to spread it. The prior Friday, 5/3/13, we had nearly 2 inches of steady rain all day. When (deleted member name) called us that following Monday, she told us that the topsoil was never covered by a tarp nor was she told it should be by us here at Russ’s Mulch. Typically, homeowners or landscapers will spread it immediately or at least cover it with impending rain. Since (deleted member name) didn’t explain to us that the topsoil would be sitting until the weekend we didn’t see the need tell her that she must cover her soil. (deleted member name) also told us that her gardeners had already rototilled the existing soil and that she no longer needed the topsoil we delivered to her. This leads us here at Russ’s Mulch to believe that she didn’t need nor want to spend the extra money since her guys were able to use her existing soil. We are unsure how one can go from needing 10 yards of Topsoil to not needing any at all. Furthermore, regarding the quality of the topsoil in dispute, we here at Russ’s only sell brown sifted topsoil that we purchase from All-Ways Contractors http://www.allwayinc.com/topsoil.aspx. Topsoil is just what the name implies: It is soil removed from the surface of the earth. Topsoil varies by location depending on its texture. Most topsoil has a textural classification. The most common is loam. Loam has less than 52 percent and, 28 to 50 percent silt and 7 to 27 percent clay. Therefore, all topsoil has a percentage of clay matter in it. When a customer calls to order Topsoil, we here at Russ’s like to make sure the customer knows what kind of soil they will be receiving as many people do not know the differences. We simply state that this is not a Black Garden Soil but rather a Brown Topsoil and it is best used under seed and sod and also good for filling in and building up around foundations. We here at Russ’s Mulch & Topsoil do not feel that we are at fault. Thank you for your time."
