Well, paying $80 to have someone wrap duct tape around a wire is a bit much. Not only that, but we had to wait a week to have them come over and do that. Not being electricians ourselves (or even very handy) we thought that chewed-through electrical wires needed to be replaced. I had never called an electrician before so didn't think to ask what the cost would be. I had a lot of stressful things going on in my life so didn't have time to shop around. Just saw the good rating on Angie's List, and he was near our home, so it's the only place I called. I'm sorry that I did. The person who answers the phone and schedules the appointment (who I assume is the owner) wasn't particularly pleasant to begin with, so I should have had a clue. Wish I would have used one of the places that offers coupons (more work done for a lot less). But I was trying to give someone else a chance who didn't have very many ratings.
So live and learn I guess. Just wanted to share this with my fellow Angie's List members so you don't make the same mistake I did. Need to realize that JM Electrical Contractors won't tell you the cost up front unless you ask, they will charge you a minimum trip charge no matter what they do (even if it only takes 10 minutes) and you will have to wait a while to get an appointment (and the guy will be a little gruff when you're scheduling the appointment). The one positive note is that the person who came to do the "work" was nice and professional.
They do commercial and residential. I believe some of their commercial experience gives them an advantage for residential work--keeping up with technology and equipment. This group is in demand and can be very busy yet have never let us down getting to us. I have referred them to others who all have found their work outstanding.
We will be using them again to install cable jacks in my parents new condo.
