Moving
The disaster began when Kevin asked, and I agreed, to pay him up front for the packing. Being hired through UHaul's Moving Helpers, he should have received payment at the completion of loading the truck. I succumbed to his sob story about needing the fee beforehand. Instead of showing up at the appointed time with another helper, he sent a two-man crew that he assured me was well-qualified to handle my goods, especially a large grandfather clock. They did arrive on time, but were not at all experienced as he had said. In the 3 hours we had paid for, they did complete the job. But the boxes and furniture and other items were not professionally loaded; instead they were just tossed and crammed in.
The only thing that did emerge unscathed from the truck upon unloading was the clock. That is only because we wrapped and packed it ourselves. Most of the furniture was scratched, stained, or chipped, having been tossed into the truck without being properly wrapped. (We had provided plenty of blankets.) The glass table top was broken. Upholstery was grease-stained, being placed in contact with outdoor equipment. The two men I had hired, also through Moving Helpers, to unload the truck on the other end were astounded at the packing job; they said it was the absolute worse they had ever seen.
Though Kevin promised to reimburse me for the broken table top and to send cleaning supplies for the upholstery, he never did, nor did he ever answer or return my calls. He lied about the experience of his crew and his promise to take care of some of the damage; there was almost no piece of furniture that escaped undamaged. He is not to be trusted and should be removed from UHaul's approved list of moving helpers.
