We found Jerry through Angie's list. Jerry was always very friendly and personable and we were excited to work with him. When we first spoke, we gave him our approximate room measurements (total 638 sq. ft.), and told him we were sanding and refinishing hardwoods currently under carpeting. He quoted us just over $1,800. When asked what he would charge for carpet removal and disposal, he told us he would "throw that in" for us (no charge). On the first day, Jerry met us at the house and took his own measurements. He made no mention of his measurements being different from those we had given him at the start. He was very surprised to see carpeting in our space and mentioned several times that he wasn't aware there was carpeting, although we had spoken about it during our initial call (see comment above). We were also having walls and trim painted before we moved into our new home, and at the start asked Jerry if the order of those two projects mattered to him, but he told us that it didn't matter whether he did the floors first or if the painter came first, because he was careful and wouldn't damage any newly painted trim. At no point during Jerry's time at our property did he mention a price increase. We did ask him to install shoe molding for us after finishing the floors, with the expectation that he would charge for that work. In addition, he pulled up a 4' x 4' section of linoleum from our entryway and sanded and refinished that flooring, but there was never any discussion about that not having been included in the initial estimate. I can't really complain about the finished product. Our newly finished floors look nice and the stain color is exactly what we wanted and asked for. However, Jerry was not careful, and did significant damage to the freshly painted trim. When I asked him about this, he blamed the painter for not having taken the appropriate steps prior to painting the woodwork. We had to spend additional money to have our painter return and not just touch-up, but apply an additional coat of paint on all trim and shoe molding. Additionally, Jerry did not stick to his promised timeline. As stated, we were also working with a painter prior to moving in. Jerry told us he would be here on a Thursday, so we asked the painter to finish her job by EOD Wednesday, which was less time than she anticipated. Jerry then didn't come on Thursday because "something came up," which would have given our painter an entire extra day to finish the project to her (and our) satisfaction. We also had a hard stop as we were moving in the following Thursday. Jerry told us he would be done on Tuesday, but in reality, was literally in my house finishing his work when I arrived with the movers on Thursday. Talk to anyone who does hardwoods. You are not supposed to walk on them (let alone move heavy furniture onto them) for at least 24 hours. We were forced to have our movers walk on freshly stained and finished floors within hours (if not minutes) of them being completed. Finally, Jerry charged us just over $3,000. When I confronted him about this, he said his measurements were different from ours which increased the price. He also charged us for carpet tear-out (we had to dispose of it ourselves with multiple trips to the local dump) when during our initial call there was no charge for this service. I understand that the price would have naturally increased due to the shoe trim install, but any other discrepancies in price should have been discussed as they arose, rather than only on a final invoice. Jerry is a very nice person, and we had already given his name to 4 potential clients for him, which together would have earned him between $15,000-20,000. We have gone back to each of these people and told them that - under no circumstances - should they work with Jerry. He needs to do a better job at communicating with his clients up front about cost. He needs to stick to the agreed upon timeline. He needs to worry less about becoming friends with his clients and be a professional. It gives me no satisfaction to write someone a bad review, but in this case, I feel it's absolutely necessary. BUYER BEWARE.
