We were replacing the roof in preparation for selling this lake home that we used on weekends. It is 240 miles from our main residence. We were not there for most of the work, but fortunately for us our realtor would keep us abreast of the progress. The garage went well. On the home, there was a flashing that needed to be installed between a transition point on each side of the A frame styled home. The realtor sent me pictures of the heavily dented flashing that was installed by M-J Roofing. When I talked with John, he said his partner could only find aluminum, which dented easily. If the realtor had not sent the pictures, the roofer would have just left it. After I talked with him he replaced the damaged material with sheet metal . After the roof was completed, I noticed a broken off corner on one of the new shingles, at eye level, where the A frame part of the roof was closer to the ground. I asked him to replace this, who wants a new roof with a broken off corner in view? I left several messages and he never returned my calls. Unfortunately I had already paid him before I noticed this. We sold the home with this broken corner.
They also left a 16' 2X10 in the yard and some scrap metal that I cleaned up.
The one time I did go to see their progress, the truck they used to carry the tear off material was on my staircase along the side of the house. The timber steps were twisted and out of place. When I pointed this out to John, he said he would fix it. Several weeks later, after the work was completed, I came back and the steps were straighter but not as level or even as before he drove on them.
Looked good, don't think there was much flashing work done had one leak. He did come over to check it out and caulked along the edge where the dormer meets the roof. Leaked again. Never did finish the garage cap. Called him and said he would be there in a few days. 4 months later still is not finished, having another roofer finish the job and fix some problems.
UPDATE: as of 10/5/2014 this is the worst roofing job probably ever done! This 3 year old roof is leaking in 3 spots ruined the ceiling and drywall in the living room area and guess what, never came back to finish the roof on the garage. Owner beware there are other roofers in town that stand by their work.
