About 4-5 weeks later, after we called to check back with them, they scheduled a day. The night before they were to come and perform the work, an employee called to follow up because he was having issues reading the notes he took a month ago. With the tree in the front of the house, he was not sure if he was to trim it or cut it down. I corrected him but in hindsight, this should have been a red flag that he did not remember any details of what we had walked him through the month earlier and we should have taken additional time off work to be there when the job was performed.
The main reason for the poor review is because of the job he did on the tree in the front of the house. It was a nice shaped tree with lower branches just above my head and somewhat taller than my two store house. Instead of thinning out the branches up high, he cut off all branches 12-15 feet up and a lot on top. It was quite a shock seeing it for the first time and my wife and I were very disappointed. He cut off 6 or 7 more large branches than was discussed. Unfortunately, what's done is done.
The services performed on the other trees was good and what we asked for. Cleanup was also poor. We were promised that we would not have any cleanup. The large branches were still cut and piled up next to the trees and there were many branches on the ground from the trimming.
I would not use them again in the future.
The original date of work had to be pushed back due to a storm that caused emergency work for Kevin. He arrived with his crew as agreed upon the following week. One dead tree was located over an extremely steep cliff, as well as, had a live cedar tree all entwined in the dead branches. They cut the tree despite the difficulty in terrain, stacked the logs in a big pile, cleaned up the mess and did little damage to the yard. There were just a couple of spots that indented the yard due to the fall of the cut tree. They were easy to repair with fill. Kevin and his crew then went to the other side of the house and took down another towering dead tree. They also cut up huge logs that had been cut previously and were too heavy too move. They cut everything in easy to load lengths and put in a pile. Trimming was done on the other tree then Kevin put a coating on the tree to protect it where the cuts had been made. Kevin noticed quite a bit of debris from trees on roof, so he blew off the roof when finished trimming. They mulched all the branches so it could be used in landscaping.
He had another guy come and grind the stumps at a later date. He did not show as expected, however, when I contacted Kevin he assured me it would be done within two days if weather permitted. It was done as agreed upon. Kevin did a great job keeping in touch with me and/or taking my phone calls. I will definitely utilize his services again if needed.
Kevin from A to Z came to give us a quote. He stressed how "professional" he was compared to others. We specifically asked about the stump grinding after reading someone else's complaint at the BBB. He assured us it wouldn't be a problem, despite the fact we had a fenced in yard with no gate. We decided to hire him.
Three weeks later, after several calls, we finally got a date to have the tree removed. That morning, he called and cancelled due to illness. A few days later, he called and rescheduled.
The actual tree removal went well. His team came in and took down the tree. They did have several branches fall on the cable line (which he had said he'd take down during the quote, but they "worked around it"). The cable line now hangs much lower than it used to. We'll end up paying the cable company to raise it.
When they went to leave, I said "Hey, you said you would haul all the wood away." He mad a call and said someone would be by to pick up. When I asked about the stump grinding, he began to backpedal.
"I didn't know you didn't have a gate."
Total lie, as I specifically asked that question during the quote. Then he said we would have to take down a section of our fence. That's not what was quoted. Then he said he could charge me to take down the fence. Again, I said that wasn't what we agreed upon. Finally, he agreed to take down the section of fence himself to get the stump grinder in.
Days later, he left us a voice mail saying it wasn't worth it for him to move the fence and offered us a $25 discount. You cannot get someone to grind a stump for $25.
We called and he finally agreed that if we took down that section of fence, he would get the stump grinded and he would put the fence back up.
A week later, someone showed up, never knocked, went into our yard, ground the stump, and left....leaving the fence down. We finally gave up, spent the hour putting the fence back up (with the help of a great neighbor) and left Kevin a message that we were unsatisfied.
Be aware that no matter what you agree to, this business will do what they please.
"At A to Z Tree Service, we strive to ensure every customer is happy with the work we perform on their property. Apparently, we were not able to do this is with this customer. The power line was taken down prior to the tree work being performed. Power lines create a safety hazard and safety is our top priority. The cable line was not taken down, which is standard practice. It was not stretched from the work we performed, but in fact had been stretched from the weight of the branches on it which we removed. It did hang lower as it was no longer being supported by branches. Cable companies do not charge to tighten the line. I never received a complaint regarding the cable line. Upon my initial quote, the husband informed me the garage service door was 38". Had this been correct, gaining access to the backyard to grind the stump would not have been an issue. However, it was only 32", thus the only viable option was to remove a section of the fence. A neighbor did remove & reinstall a section of the fence. I made proper compensation deducting amounts for this work from the bill. The fence would not have been an issue if proper door measurements were provided at the time of the quote. The wood was picked up in a timely manner. When all work was complete, the husband told me we did an excellent job."
