They were Great

Working with Prairie Plumbing and Heating was a disappointment at every step of our septic project: - Perc test: didn't test where I asked and falsely blamed my wife when I asked why. I was very clear that I didn't want it too far out but I was reassured they wouldn't do that. - Gave a rough estimate that they had no intention of keeping, even though they knew exactly what the site looked like and what the project entailed. Project went over budget, not because of any unforeseen problems, just because they didn't plan properly. - Charged $500 for 20 minutes of work to mow some weeds, without my approval, nor my knowledge that they were a problem. I could have taken care of it in a couple hours. - Placed the septic exactly how I told them not to: way out in the field, not where they drew it, actually crossed a property line that was marked (they mowed over the markers when they mowed the weeds), and didn't tuck it into the hillside nicely like they promised. - Purchased topsoil without my consent when I already had a pile of topsoil specifically for the septic within 20 yards of the site. - When I addressed my concerns to PP&H, Merle hung up on me and threatened liens on the house. I was just looking for some acknowledgment and sincerity of some of their errors and was only met with extreme unprofessionalism.

This was an emergency call.  The hot water handle on the bathtub faucet broke off and the water started shooting out of the open hole.  The main water valve was so old and corroded that it could not be turned off.  I called Prairie Plumbing and they pulled a plumber off another job and he was at my house in about 30 minutes.  The water flow was stopped and he left to get what he needed to fix the faucet.  He returned, fixed the faucet and replaced the old main water valve.  From start to finish, it took about two hours, including the time to go get supplies.  I was very happy and thankful for their quick service and for such a reasonable price for and emergency call.

In the past they have put in the whole heating system, including a new furnace as well as a hot water heater and water softener. They seem to be pretty responsive and I have had no issues with their work. I am satisfied; I am not so much price conscious as I am service.

They just do service work for us.  I don't have a lot to say about them but they come once a year to check our furnace, clean it and change the filter as well as humidifier.  We are happy with them.  I don't know the price because my husband pays the bill.  Their price is probably reasonable.  They used to be located very near but now that they moved to Sauk City, we have to catch them on the day they are going to be Madison.  We have to get the date when they are going to be in the Madison area or they charge us a trip charge which is quite a bit extra.  We were surprised when we finally got the bill.  We've had them in the past.  Then we found out that they charge extra for their drive every time so now we just make arrangements for when they are going to be here.  The guy who comes is brother of a friend of mine.  He is just real personable and my husband liked him.  I'm sure the price would be average or my husband would be going with somebody else.  They do a good job.  I think we were able to get hold of them to schedule the appointment.

Asked to have a check valve replaced in a well pump. 30 minutes after they left, the a huge hole collapsed around the well because an underground leak undermined all the soil. They brought a digger later in the afternoon and dug around the well. They went home and said they would return the next day to weld the pitless adapter. The next morning they never showed up. I called and they said that they decided not to weld it, and they said I should drill a new well. $500 for a  huge hole, ruined well, and torn up yard.
Response from Prairie Pumbing & Heating Inc
"The fact is the existing well was not up to code and it was not realized until we dug it up and by law we can not work on a well that is not up to code without calling the State of Wisconsin to report violations as we can loose our license in that situation. Sorry you needed a new well."

I thought they did a great job.  They found some problem in the duct work that has been there for years since we bought the house.  They solved the problem and that was going above and beyond.  They did a great job. I was very happy with them.  We referred them to a friend and they liked them too. The workers that came out were very good. I will use them in the future.

They came out the day we called, showed me what had happened (bugs got into the electrical switch, which was old and corroded), made a very speedy repair with replacement parts and were on their way in less that an hour.

Gas lines needed to be changed from half inch to 3/4 inch diameter. Existing gas line to the kitchen ran outside the house in copper pipe. That was to be replaced at the same time as gas line in the cellar. The estimate was made including the gas run to the kitchen. The installers decided they didn't have a clear way to run the new pipe inside the house. They said to call them when I remodeled and had the wall cavities exposed. When I tore off the plaster to do this they then broke there promise and refused to finish the quoted work.
Response from Prairie Pumbing & Heating Inc
"You did not do the remodel you said you would do and that made the addition of the gas line impossible. We made a number of trips to your home and each time you were not done and made the small job into a mountain compared to what you said would be done. If you were honest with us in the beginning we would have been more than happy to work with you. When you add additional items as you go along with a project and do not want to pay any additional charges, we can not ask our employees to work for free."

Excellent job! Robert and Chris found a way to neatly complete this project. The enclosed soffit was difficult to navigate as it encased heat ducts and entailed a bend. They did it in the least aggressive way possible, cutting only a small rectangular hole in the ceiling. They also completed the job within budget and within the time frame.

I had called Prairie Plumbing for a second opinion, on why my well pump kept freezing up. The service I had been using, had worked on it several times and said I was going to need a new expansion tank (now under ground and very close to the foundation of the house)and that this would probably cost about $3000. After assessing the situation for 5 minutes, Robert thought that rotating the electrical trip mechanism for the pump, would solve the problem by preventing it from freezing. He was absolutely correct and the problem was solved.
