Day Two: he came back late again and painted the lower bathroom (one coat and less than half the paint he had told me to purchase) and left paint marks on the ceiling! When I asked him about it he says "I can remove those if you want me to." He never used a drop cloth or any tape. I had been working on the wallpaper myself using a scorer -- he had never even seen one!! He didn't seem to have any tools of the trade at all and mostly used mine. Overall, I was feeling very nervous about his qualifications.
Day Three: he goes to paint the upper bathroom which I had removed all the wallpaper from myself. He did not sand, repair, wash, or prime the wall before painting and didn't even paint in one area. There is paint on the ceiling again and the work will clearly need to be redone. Simply paint on an unfinished wall and he left all the garbage in the room with a sink an absolute wreck. When I consulted Sherwin-Williams they informed me of all the work that needed to be done now.
He happened to call me later because he had left a tool at my house and I let him know that it looked absolutely terrible. He offered to come back and repaint it which is impossible at this point because of all the work that needs to be done on the wall. He never called me back after that conversation. It makes me extremely nervous to think he is out there doing similar work in others' homes. Absolute disaster of a job and would never recommend him especially considering how much of the work I had to do myself.
"The client never talked with me directly in person to state her extensive on line complaints while I worked for her over 3 days - which puzzles me. She never stated that she was unhappy with my work during the 3 days that I was at her home. She did say that the bathroom wall was not smooth enough – which I worked on again sanding down to meet her expectations. She chose to work on the wallpaper removal herself – I told her that I would do it all. I do have tools of the trade that I used on her job – apparently she did not notice. I called her a week later about t tool I had left behind and she told me that she had hired another company to re-do one wall. She did not tell me about her other complaints. I was 15 minutes late on 2 days because I got lost, not knowing her area, but I did call ahead both times to tell her I was coming. She waited to state her complaints only on line, never by telephone or to my face. Had I known how unsatisfied she was, I of course would have re-done the work until she was happy. She did not have to hire another company. I strive to please all of my clients until they are satisfied. She also is disrespectful to me in mocking me on line. This is unnecessary, while hurting my business, and has nothing to do with her work."
I called and scheduled the initial visit. He arrived on time and took notes about the job I was asking him to fix. I assumed at that point that he would get the materials and bill me for them. Unfortunately, when he showed up on the scheduled date (on time), he didn't have any materials, i.e. no drywall, tape, mud or other items. I was confused as he had made a list so I assumed he would provide those. I was not able to get the supplies at that time so he removed all the old stuff and did what he could.
The next week, after I supplied most of the supplies, he arrived on time to do the bulk of the work. He did a good job. He was polite and kind and did a much better job than I could have done but I was still a bit confused as to why he didn't initially tell me that he expected me to have all the materials available. That is part of why I had hired someone as I am not a builder or contractor.
It was not a big issue.
He returned and continued to mud and sand the job. I added a few areas for him to fix that were not in the original plan so I was happy to pay him above and beyond the original Angie's List deal. I provided sand paper, a sander and masks. He mudded the new areas and had to leave to let them dry so I knew there were be an additional visit required. We scheduled it.
He arrived on time for the final visit and did what he could. Sadly, he was not able to sand all of the areas to a professional level. I will still need to mud a few areas and sand the final product. Still, as I said before, the entire job is better than I could have done myself but it isn't quite what I expected. I was left with slightly more work than I had wanted but, I didn't pay a grand amount.
In the future, I would recommend he make it clear what supplies would be needed prior to arrival for the initial job day. It would have made things go a bit smoother. Also, a reliable vehicle would be valuable. Scott was pleasant to work with, and I trust him but would have to hesitate to hire him again without being a bit more clear up front about his abilities and needs (as far as materials) up front. I am not fully displeased with the job I paid for and received. I am just not completely satisfied. It is adequate.
I might consider him again but I will be a bit more clear in the future about what each of us expects before the first visit and the full scope of the job.
"It was apparent when we two workers arrived at the job that we were not what this customer expected. The customer also states some inaccurate information: We did call ahead to the customer to say that we would be 20 minutes late as the truck broke down that morning. We did bring a ladder and caulking and I did stir the paint that she provided. She was unhappy with us and I understand her situation. I am very concerned with customer satisfaction and work to achieve that with each customer."
"I first scheduled and did a site visit shortly after the purchase of services, then scheduled [Member Name Removed]'s actual work for as soon as possible. [Member Name Removed] was clearly very nervous about the drywall repair work quality and my method of repair work did not meet his expectations. I always strive to please clients and customer services is very important to me."
"I promptly scheduled and completed a site visit for [Member Name Removed]'s work. I then scheduled her actual work shortly after the site visit and completely at her convenience in the mid-afternoon at her request. It was clear from the beginning that she had very high standards of work expectations and was nervous. My method of repair did not meet her expectations. I strive to please my clients and customer service is very important to me."
He did a good job and cleaned up everything. No issues.
