We needed to replace the shower valve because it was leaking badly. We also decided to replace the water heater as well. We expanded the job to include redoing the shower because when Patrick visited the job he declared the shower walls and pan were 'rotted out' and needed immediate replacement; this required the shower to be gutted and rebuilt. the original contract called for 11k worth of work. The first problem was when he did not want to provide the model of the water heater, we wanted to research its energy efficiency rating. He simply refused; he couldn't remember or call us back--but it was going to be just fine,,,,it was a really good rating. When they came in and started the job the demolition job began, the workers were ready to cut the pipes before shutting off the water pressure--this is a high rise the the water pressure would cause damage to the building as well as flooding our apartment. They left construction debrie overflowing several cans and loose on the floor impeding our entrance -- the debrie was not cleared and we had to keep moving it around until the end of the job, which lasted over two weeks. Halfway through the job he told us we did not need to replace and pipes and made a big deal of knock off 1k from the price because the work wasn't needed. He brought up several times that he could have just charged us... The tile job was very poor quality with lots of odd cuts and in one place there is a gap of over a square inch covered with grout and caulk no tile. Existing floor tile was cracked when the shower pan was removed and when they tried to repair that more tile was cracked--more than the original damage. the grouting was sloppy with gaps in the grout. Less than 2 weeks after the job was "completed" the grout began to darken. When he came to look at the problem he raised his voice wouldn't listen and say how he has been doing this for over 30 years. When we talked about the odd cuts he told us we should have informed him ahead of time that we didn't want lots of little pieces of tile and expected him to plan the job and avoid it (!) He explained the darkening grout as "bad grout," and would grind it out and replace before Thanksgiving, and reminded us that he didn't charge us for the work that was not needed as if this was above and beyond. Yesterday we discovered a leak in the shower piping, it looks to be near the shower control valve. We had an appointment for the plumber to come between 10 and 11 today. After 11 we call and were told the plumber was delayed and would come at 12. Our call was ignored and when the plumbers came, at 1:15, and they declared that the mistake was giving us any time at all, This was a small job. 8 years ago we had another bathroom completely gutted and redone 8 years ago for 25k and it looks very high end. This job looks like a cheap do it yourself. The workers were very unprofessional in practice,conduct and results.
