Recently, I wanted to do some updating in our kitchen and again turned to DG Remodelers for assistance. Countertops, lighting, paint and decorating turned out beautifully, I can't help but stand and stare. I was told at the beginning of the project that the countertops would take approximately 6 weeks from the date we placed the order. I was given periodic updates and when I had a question, I received a prompt response. When it comes to building or remodeling I can't say enough about the David & Goliath family!! Keep up the good work.
Northern home building went smoothly. We had the lot before plans to build and D&G was willing to come to northern WI to build. Broke ground in October and home was complete the following March. We ordered appliances from Milwaukee area and would not be delivered to construction site, but Dave picked up, delivered to northern WI (3.5 hrs away) and installed. We still get compliments on the home. The quality does not compare to other homes around us. We look forward to heading north to our great home there.
We always use Angie’s List as a resource, and were surprised to find only one review for DG Remodeling. It was a very short, negative review, having to do with an unreturned phone call. At the time, we didn’t think that was enough of a reason to eliminate them from consideration. We should’ve paid more attention to that review . . . good communication is not a strong point of this company.
We signed our contract in late April. Unfortunately, ours was a project that had many problems, large and small. We
started out immediately with some structural issues that added another several thousand dollars to the cost. We knew
there would be “unknowns” behind walls and ceilings – we had both, and it brought our project to an impasse due to the additional expense. We relied on the recommendation of our local building inspector to get past this first setback.
We made our selections on May 4th for all kitchen design components. We learned on July 2nd, almost two months later, that the countertop we chose was on backorder until August AND that the backsplash tile we chose was no longer available (it hadn’t been ordered until end of June). Very bad news to hear this late in the project. We decided to go with a different countertop suggested by our designer in hopes of preventing further delay. It obviously wasn’t our first choice but was fairly close in color. As it turned out, DG couldn’t get the stocked countertop installed any sooner than the backordered countertop.
The backsplash tile was a fiasco, but we'll abbreviate. Our designer had done a great job of putting together color choices for us in May. The tile she chose really pulled everything together – it was a beautiful piece, we liked it very much. To find out in July that it was no longer available was a huge disappointment. Our designer had some alternate samples for us to look at, but they had nowhere near the quality or detail of the original choice. We now felt rushed to find a different tile. We called the manufacturer of our original choice directly to find out if they had surplus stock anywhere that we could buy, and were told that this particular tile had been discontinued over two years ago. We asked Dand G why we were shown a discontinued item, but never got an answer. We told our designer that we would also do some looking for a different tile, however, we felt as though we were doing the lion’s share of trying to find something else. We had to ask several times to find out what our tile allowance was so that we knew what price range we should be looking in when we were out searching. When we simply could not find the quality of tile in the price range we were given, we asked (several times) exactly where we should be shopping to find the right mix, but never got an answer to that question. One week before the tile setter was scheduled to come, our designer found something she thought would work. Again, it wasn’t our first choice but we were getting too near the tile install date and had to find something. The tile setter then had to be delayed a week because the new tile wasn’t available locally.
Though they did beautiful work, Dand G subs came and went with little regard for given dates and times. Dand G is not proactive in controlling this “revolving door” and will not give you the courtesy of a heads-up when they know of a conflict. We understand there are a lot of moving parts to a remodeling job, but it would’ve been nice to know who would be in our home and when, and to be informed of any changes to that schedule.
We had an on-going problem with an entry door that pretty much soured the rest of our project. We had requested the door to be installed as a side job. There was a misunderstanding because the door we received was not at all what we had in mind.
We told our designer that we’d like to return the door and be refunded – we would find a door ourselves and have it installed. We were told that would be fine. We asked twice when we would be receiving our refund for the returned door. We didn’t
get an answer initially. The second time we asked, our designer told us that normally the refund would be handled in the form of a credit at closing, and that she would have to ask the owner about issuing a refund check instead. Several weeks went by and we didn't hear anything back on this issue. Fast forward to a few days before our closing. We asked to see the final invoice, etc., to make sure everything was in order, including the door credit - since we never did receive a refund check,
we wanted to make sure that credit was included in our closing documents. It was not. We called our designer to ask about it, and she replied that we wouldn’t be getting the credit because there were some additional building permits to be paid for. It seemed odd to us that there was a permit issue this late in the project and that we were just hearing about it a few days before our closing. We asked if we could get a copy of the permit and the receipt and were told “no” - this really wasn’t an acceptable response so we asked to have the owner of Dand G call us. We were told to leave a voicemail for him, which we did, but he never
returned our call. It’s now the day before our closing and we’ve left messages that we’d like the door issue resolved before we close. No response. The morning of the closing, we still hadn’t heard anything back from anyone at Dand G. We left another voicemail for our designer that we would not be meeting them for the closing because we hadn’t heard back from anyone on the unresolved issue. No response. We also texted our designer to make sure she received our voicemail about the closing - no response to that, either. We’re trying to get a problem resolved, and our designer and the company owner have decided they’re not going to communicate with us - unbelievable, and extremely unprofessional.
We also received a revised invoice from Dand G reflecting a higher final payment – no explanation, just a higher total. Change orders were missing. There was an unexplained credit which turned out to be a partial credit for the door. About an hour after our closing should’ve taken place, we received a voicemail from Dand G’s office manager, telling us that they’d like us to call to reschedule our closing, and that until the closing was completed, we were not to “use or occupy” the remodeled space otherwise our warranties might be voided . . . directly opposite of what our designer had told us about using our kitchen prior to closing.
We weren’t comfortable with what we were seeing: Dand G's indifference on the door issue, the fluctuating final payment figure, and that the designer and owner became completely unresponsive as we were trying to settle our closing, so we retained
an attorney to review our contract and closing documents. We sent the attorney’s findings to Dand G, whereupon Dand G revised our final invoice and gave us full credit for the door. We were able to close.
We wish we could give a better review of DG Remodeling because our kitchen did turn out beautifully, but because of the bad note we ended on, we would not use them again. Some of the problems we ran into were out of anyone’s control but Dand G would’ve made a much better impression by resolving issues and answering questions promptly and directly, rather than ignoring or glossing over them. And that the company owner and their designer stopped communicating with us at the time of our closing was completely in
