Just before Memorial Day, no word from Carl so we called and left a message with one of the workers who knew nothing, and could not get hold of Carl.  Subsequently he called and left a message here, three days later saying that the fabric company was no longer in business and that our cushions were not even started.  He had no problem refunding our deposit.
Here is the translation.  In 2 and 1/2 months, he did not order the fabric.  We would have known that issue soon after we originally went there if he had not just left our stuff sit in a pile.  He did manage to rip the cushions apart and  then did not return them to us in the original condition.  We will have to tuck them in ourselves every time we move them.   It is our impression that other (bigger) jobs took priority and that he bit off more than he could chew this season.  If staff are out or quit, then we should be informed, not ignored.  We will now have to start over at the end of the boating season with another company.
To be honest, Carl has done excellent work in the past.  Our canvas was completely replaced three years ago and we are happy with it.   We have recommended his work as well since that time.   Caution going forward
Our fault for not documenting on the contract a date of finish; perhaps he would have paid more attention to us.
