Everything seemed to go well.  However, the initial estimate was not even close to the ending costs. Then the floor started to crack. About 1/3 of the tiles are cracked.  He has come back and admitted it his fault but is at a loss to fix it.  Talking to other contractors, the problem is an inadequate subfloor preparation.  We can't rip out the cabinets and start all over.  The only recourse is to lay an ugly floating laminate floor over it.  This would be difficult because my mom, who lives here, uses a wheelchair and there would be at least a 1/2" step up.  Also, the pocket doors which cannot be removed without destroying the walls will not clear this. Also it would result in problems with the wainscotting, trim, cabinets.  It would also destroy the beauty of the room and decrease resale value. The kitchen improvement should have increased the value of the house, it now lessens it.  At no time during construction did John state that there could be a problem.  Previously, I had 2 bathrooms and a hall way remodeled using the same tile by a different contractor. There is no problem in these areas.  I have had 3 different contractors look at the kitchen.   All have said that it is cracked and ruined because of inadequate subfloor preparation. I had John come back once to show him the problem. The second time I had him come back to tell me exactly what he did. I asked him to bring in samples of laminate and talk about how he would fix it.  He said he couldn't get samples, that I should look online. I find John has been very unhelpful in trying to remedy this problem that is totally due to his poor workmanship.
Response from J F Improvements LLC
"After Demo-ing kitchen, and prior to installing cement board underlayment I brought to the member’s attention that there was a lot of movement in subfloor, and that we should add an extra ½” cement board to compensate. Her response was that she didn’t want kitchen floor to be higher than adjacent hallways. Not having that solid base is contributing to the floor moving and cracking. Furthermore the member supplied the tile which were much thinner than most floor tile I have seen or installed. I went as far as trying to contact tile company in Brazil, but they did not respond in my opinion the faults should be divided in three, 1/3 me, 1/3 the member, and 1/3 tile company. I have been doing tile work for twenty years, and almost never have a grout line crack let alone an entire floor. I feel terrible that this happened and should have refused to install the tile without the additional cement board. One additional note, the reason the original estimate and final costs varied was because of additional work being added as you can see on enclosed invoices."

John has worked for me on numerous occasions and always does a good job. He's reasonably priced and does a good clean-up when the job is completed. Also, he shows up when expected.

What makes JF Improvements stand out is the follow through on the work schedule. I have ran the gamut of contractors who promise the work will be done a a certain time and then they disappear. I have actually delt with JF Improvements for over twenty years. He always shows up on time, always explains what will be done and what the issues are with the repairs. The experience with JF Improvement is that of a professional contractor. The work scope is explained and estimated, the work is done on time in a professional way and the job is finished on time and and within the estimate.
