Who is Grounds Maintenance Services? Everybody has a place they call home. More than a physical location, it’s where they feel secure, grounded and tied in with the community. For Grounds Maintenance Services, “home” is Brookfield, Wis. It’s where the family-owned company started in 1999, and still operates. It’s where owner Todd Ruedt grew up, and still lives. It’s where we hire our employees, who take pride in helping their neighbors. As a deeply-rooted Brookfield business, GMS understands the value that people place on their yards and landscapes. We stay abreast of the latest techniques and technology to keep our customers’ properties looking their best. Our staff is fully trained and certified to undertake any needed projects or tasks. Above all, our definition of success is building relationships based on communication. Our customers are always “in the loop” about what we are doing for them. It’s a simple formula that goes beyond typical “customer service.” You see, our customers aren’t just names on an invoice. They’re our friends, neighbors and fellow Brookfield residents. We feel a special bond with them. That feeling shows in the work we do.

The owner walked the entire property with me. Todd knew every type of plant and offered suggestions about what to cut back and keep or what to remove. He emailed an estimate the next day and scheduled a crew for the same week. Mark was the crew leader. Todd walked the property with the crew. They had a written work plan. Mark and two others worked the entire day in an organized, efficient way. Each bed was pruned and cleaned according to the plan. Every shrub was trimmed and shaped. The debris filled a small dump truck and trailer twice. Everything was picked up and the driveway was cleaned before they left. We are very pleased with the result. Our home now has great curb appeal.

They cut the grass way too fast, putting multiple ruts into the ground on multiple occasions. I had to yell at their owner at least twice on the phone to get this to stop.
They destroyed my property and at least once tried to hide it. Multiple times they never showed up when they were supposed to and refused to come out until the following week. After I fired them for their gross incompetence they still sent me invoices for them to keep coming out.
When we had them move some bushes, they cut them back drastically (even though we never told them they had the right to cut them back at all) and the bushes still haven't recovered from that.
Avoid this horrible company like the plague.

Communication was very poor.  Had to contact them several times to ask when our job would be completed.  I was concerned because the deposit check had already been cashed and we did not hear anything for weeks.  I got the impression that this company does not appreciate small homeowner jobs and only concentrates on commercial/big $$$ business.  I'm not sure that they really dug up the flower bed, as the old plants are already coming back through the thick layer of mulch.

The work itself was good. The workers came, and got the job done well - everything was done in a day.
The management and communication, however, were beyond terrible. We were told that we would be scheduled 2-3 weeks out from when we paid our deposit. About 3 weeks later, we were told we were next and we would be called by the production manager by the end of that week to let us know when they would be coming.
After hearing nothing for nearly two weeks, I emailed them and the lady who responded said she would talk to the production manager and we should hear from him soon. Another week passed and still nothing. I emailed again, and she said she printed out my email (printed it out, really???) and gave it to the production manager and we would hear from him "very soon".
After another week, I sent a final email telling them they had until the end of the day to respond with a guaranteed start date, reason for the delays and lack of communication, and an apology for the above. Nothing came. The next morning, I called their number, left a message (even though their offices were open at that time) and got no response to my call. I finally found their facebook page and publicly stated that I needed someone there to contact me because I have been getting no responses to any of my inquiries. I finally got a response there, saying that they would have someone get in touch with me that day.
The production manager finally called (although, I believe it was the next day, not that same day) and said they would be coming on Monday, July 1st or Tuesday, July 2nd at the latest. When I asked for the reason for the delay, he said that when we paid our deposit, he was 5 weeks out, not 2-3. And when I asked why I couldn't have been given that information by him (or had him give it to the lady who actually WAS communicating with me) any of the numerous times before I had talked with someone, he provided no reason.
As I said, the service itself was good, and the landscapers that came and did the work were absolutely fine, but I would only ever use their service again if I received an apology for the above and a guarantee that their communication would be much better (and probably a significant discount to make up for the hassle I've had to deal with on this project).

Their service price is reasonable.  They do spring and fall cleanup.  Their service is excellent.  They are very professional, and they got the right equipment.  They are careful with our properties.  They do a nice job of cleaning up.  They answer our questions about tree trimming, tree cut down, and other stuff.  They are very professional that way.

They will do a horrible job, damage your property and bill you for services that they never provided.  A five year old could do better work and they get nasty with you when you ask them to repair the damages that they do.  Now I also need to hire a landscaping company to come replace the lawn, of which the top 2 inches was plowed right off and piled up against the house. The company billed me for snow plowing and shoveling on 1/30, 2/2, 2/4 and 2/7.  Of those 4 days they only actually showed up to plow on one of them, and did a horrible job where I had to re-do pretty much all of it myself.  They did not shovel in front of the garage or the front stoop at all, used no salt and smashed up my front downspout and didn't say anything about it until I called to complain. The company said they would have "Pat" contact me, and when I hadn't heard from him for four days and water was leaking into the basement from melting snow that was plowed into the side of the house, I sent them an email to complain again about the downspout and the poor quality of the snow plowing job. They had plowed so much snow against the house (as opposed to pushing it out into the yard) that as it melted it was leaking into my basement due to the smashed downspout.  Eventually Pat did call me and his primary concern at that point was to argue with me about whether it had been 4 days or a week since I made the call asking to have it fixed. (He was right, it was 4 days and not 7, but what difference does it make?)   Pat did come out and replace the damaged downspout and agreed to put down salt and try to do a better job in the future and at that point I had considered keeping them on as my snow plowing and lawncare company... But low and behold a few days later I received a bill in the mail for $232 for 4 snow plowing visits when they had really only showed up to plow and shovel once, did a very poor job and damaged the house in the process.  I know for a fact that they did not come the other 3 times because there was only a little bit of snow those days and I had to walk through it every time I left the house...  I would not recommend this company to anyone-- they are very unprofessional, do terrible work and will attempt to defraud you into paying for work that they never did.  There is zero followup-- when you call they do not answer the phone, when you email they do not reply.  Sadly I have to give this company the worst possible rating I can give because it doesn't get any worse than this.

The guy is extremely difficult to get along with. He yells at me for not satisfying his expectations and scolds me and tells me how things will be done regardless of what I want. I would never hire him again regardless of the quality of his work. He is very unprofessional.

They have been punctual in mowing the lawn but less than responsive to our requests for cutting it lower. 2 days after they cut the yard it looks like it needs to be cut again. We talked with Todd and he said they cut all lawns the same length. Todd has been less than responsive and sometimes difficult to deal with. The weeds are out of control and much worse than when we maintained the yard on our own. We are looking elsewhere for our lawn care.
