This YMCA is decent for the price. It is the most affordable indoor pool option for a family in Wauwatosa. Everyone working is friendly enough and the cardio/weight area has recently been updated. The pool is separated into a large and small pool - one for lap swimming and the other geared more towards kids, respectively. There is a good size whirlpool and nice steam room in the ladies locker room. However, the only part really lacking at this Y is the locker room and showers; they have not changed since I the mid-80s when I started going there as a kid!
Description of Work: This is the gym my family has belonged to since I was a kid.

Very nice facility. Equipment was always in good working order and while it was rather busy at times I could always find a machine. I liked the large open main area with cardio and weights, however, my daughter prefers the Waukesha Y where the track, cardio room and weight room areas are separate. It is a little more expensive than the 24 hour places in strip malls but offers much more with classes, pool, and very helpful staff. I only use cardio and weight machines but still feel the Y is worth the added cost.

I have been to the Y to use the fitness center several times since joining at the end of May. It has been quite busy most times I have visited but there are many machines and I have never had to wait to get on a machine I wanted to use. They could use more parking though. The least crowded time I went was on a Sunday evening. I used to go to the Y in Waukesha which is less crowded overall but I like the hours here better and I think the equipment is newer/nicer at this location. Staff has been friendly. I really like having the mini-lockers near the fitness center so it's not necessary to go to the locker room to store purse, phone, etc. securely. At first I didn't like the weight machines all in the same very large room with all the cardio equipment, but now I don't mind it as much. Price is ok. I like that you do not have to sign a long term contract.

I have only been there five times but would recommend it to others because they were helpful and got me signed up easily and explained how everything works at the YMCA.

We joined the YMCA in 2005: I was looking to do a triathlon and was looking for a pool to train in. We also signed the kids up for swimming lessons then. We remained members for five years, and after a while we just stopped using it for many reasons. I got fit on my own from 2002-2005 without a club and am working out at home again; my wife switched to Cardinal Fitness. The facilities are nice, but we found definite drawbacks. First of all, there's the parking - it can take a while to find a spot, especially during peak times. Then there's the check in process, and since the upstairs quick lockers are full a lot, you have to go downstairs to get a locker, and then double back up to the fitness center. This process often tacked an additional 20 minutes of time to squeeze into a tight schedule. As for the fitness center, We both had trouble finding equipment at different times of the day. Their free weights section is often overcrowded, especially the power racks. The issue was what to do with our older kids. Our kids were 11, 8, and 6, and the older ones often had problems finding something to do. There are limits to what they can do alone, and child care only goes to 7 or 8. Our son often wanted to play basketball, but he ran into trouble with older teens hogging the court and other inappropriate behavior (swearing, etc.) I had to speak up on several occasions in the locker room when I heard inappropriate language. The staff is varied: some are very friendly, and others are not. I found the management and front desk staff to be great, yet others not so good. They weren't rude, it's just that I never thought they really enjoyed their jobs. As long as the West Suburban YMCA continues to be crowded and do things as they were done when I left, I doubt I would go back there.

I left them about a year ago because they changed a bunch of stuff and it no longer worked for me. People should get a trial membership and see if they like it to start out.

I have a monthly membership but we’ve been going for years. The price is for all five of my family members. It’s a good place and I never have any trouble there as far as people being rude or anything. They have everything: swimming pool, saunas, whirlpools, steam rooms, message rooms, classes, and workouts. They are open from 5 in the morning till 9 at night. Whenever you have a question, they are diligent in answering it and taking care of the problems.

Wonderful. My daughter had a blast. The counselors were friendly and energetic. They also have great fieldtrips and keep the kids busy all day! My daughter came home wiped out.

I've really enjoyed going to the YMCA and prior to this, have never been able to get myself to do a regular workout. The facility is nice and there are people of all sizes and ages there, which adds to the family atmosphere. They have classes for everyone including children. They also have a free Commit to be Fit program where you can meet with a trainer for free for 3-4 sessions to help you get started.

We belong to the YMCA. It is a clean place to work out. Our kids have attended the kid care and they love it. The yoga classes are exceptional and the pool is perfect for lap swimming.

I have grown to love the YMCA. At first, I thought the building was slightly outdated (still is). The staff, equipment, and classes are all well worth the monthly fee. The classes for children are excellent. I really enjoy some of the Body Pump classes as well. It is generally very well kept and seems to be quite clean. I use the kid care there as well, and the people who take care of the kids are wonderful. I highly recommend the west suburban YMCA.
