I hired this company to replace my laundry sink because the drain line between the trap and the basin was rusted out. They recommended a new sink, which was fine. When the plumber arrived, he told me there was unnecessary piping next to the sink, so he cut it out and capped it. However, after installing the new sink, it now drains extremely slowly — which was never an issue before. When I asked about the slow drain, they claimed my vent stack was clogged and insisted it had nothing to do with the pipes they removed. That seems like quite a coincidence to me, but okay. The bigger problem is that while the plumber was professional in some ways, he was not helpful and was very aggressive — even borderline threatening — toward my wife when she asked about a return trip to resolve the issue. That is absolutely unacceptable behavior.

They were a bit pricey.  I did get a discount but I felt it was a bit too expensive.  He knew exactly what to do and I have had no problems since.  They do excellent work.  The skills were there, but again I just felt it was a bit expensive.

Since the service had been finished I inquired with another contractor for a second opinion on what I paid for this toilet installation. He says that I paid way too much.

I acted like a new customer and called The American Plumber to inquire about the cost of installing a toilet. He mentioned that he charges a $125 fee to file the paperwork for the permit, plus the fee for the permit itself of $55. He said the whole installation cost would be $325, but ended up charging $395, plus another service fee of $49. He ended up giving a discount b/c my I was an Angie's List member, but the overall cost was much too high. He did not give me any prices when I called to inquire about service originally. I am very upset with the overall experience and I don't even know if a permit was bought in the first place. I will be calling to check into the status of the permit.
Response from The American Plumber
"This was a return customer who's daughter called several weeks later because she felt her mom paid too much, we always quote our pricing before we start, we always treat our customers with respect, her daughter is the one behind this report not the customer. Yes a permit was pulled. I feel bad for this customer, my mom is 87 and we always take care of things for her when they are needed ,not come around two weeks later and claim she was ripped off. We treat our customers as if they were our parents we were working for. !!!!!"

I had to get something done very quickly because my old water heater had stopped working without warning. A neighbor had recently used The American Plumber. I called on Friday morning, and he was able to come out that evening. He was punctual and was fastidious about cleaning up after the work. I enjoy talking to people who come to work on my home; he was very informative, even answering my questions about possibly installing a sump pump. Yes, I would recommend him.

From start to finish I was pleased with the communication, price, and service. I will be using them againt his week to install so me shut off valves needed in other areas of the house for an upcoming remodeling project.

He talked me into replacing the basement toilets instead of repairing them. He stated the toilets would be comparable in pricing to replacing them and also if I purchased them myself. He was only here about 2 hours. I called him after he left to talk about the lower price for the toilet I saw in the paper. He said he would call me back, but never did. Subsequently, I cancelled the check. He became very upset about this and is not taking me to court. During the installation, his son (a two year apprentice) was unsupervised for the majority of the time. He sat in his truck, only coming in to do a few 30 check ups on his son's work.
Response from The American Plumber
"The member called our company, which she has used before and had some questions about our service, I went over the job in detail with her , we serviced her main floor toilet replacing a leaking valve, fixed her laundry tray faucet, resetting the handles, showed her the main shut off valved to turn in case of emergency, then I gave her three options on her basement toilet, 1-repair it, 2- replace with like model, 3-upgrade to a handi cap model, she chose the upgrade and I told her all pricing in advance, after the service and one day later she called the offfice and demanded a price reduction because Menards had the same toilet for less, I told her that we could not do this because the work was completed and we had signed a contract, she claimed we had duped her and that we should know that Menards had the same toilet for less and I once again explained that we had agreed upon a price and signed a contract and we don't know all of the sale pricing in the city and actually that it wasn't the exact same model. She then informed me that she had stopped payment on her check the same day we did the service, and I informed her that we would seek restitution in court if she didn't remit payment in full plus bank fees, she then flew into a rage on the phone claiming we rip off elder people and she would now sue us! We have forwarded this matter to our attorney as now we can,t personally reresent ourselves. This is unfortunate as she will now have her bill increased by court costs , attorney fees, interest, etc. Approx $350.00 extra and we will have to garnish her checking account also. We provided excellent service, prompt, and professional as always, it is unfortunate that she didn't understand that you cant change the price after the fact!"

We were very satisfied with them. We chose them because they are local, as we live in Milwaukie and they gave us the best bid. They were prompt and very efficient. You couldn't tell that they had been here when they left, as they really cleaned up well after themselves. They were excellent and if need be, then we would use their services in the future too.
