The old, sagging porch was torn off and the debris hauled away.  This first part of the project went fairly smoothly, except when there was some old debris under the porch and the project manager wanted to charge us to haul it away.  It was a small amount of old junk and I asked them to just leave it there as long as it wasn't in the way.  So they left it, except one of the workers called to have another guy pick up some old window weights that were among the junk.  I didn't not allow that to happen...not their property to take in to the salvage yard. Also, the building inspector took a look at this point and allowed them to just cap the existing cream city brick footings with new concrete.  This saved them a lot of work, not having to dig out four old footings and pour new concrete ones.  They just dumped a few bags of concrete mix and poured water in each of the holes.  Despite the saved labor and materials the bill was not adjusted, irritating since they were wanted to charge us to haul a few things to the dump. Next the new framing went in and was inspected and passed as long as some additional framing was added above one of the footings since the original footing was not directly below the column it was meant to support.  This was done and the decking was installed and looked great.  Next they were to jack up the front of the roof which had sagged a few inches along with the porch below.  They brought all of one bottle jack to lift the entire 30 foot span.  Obviously this didn't work well and they stopped, not wanting to do any damage.  One corner was lifted a little bit, not nearly what we were expecting.  Then the columns were replaced.  The old columns were approx. 10 inch square boxed columns and we were clear from the start that we wanted to keep the same, historic look.  At first they started to put up much smaller cedar columns which I objected to.  They took that lumber back and came back with some wider pine boards to construct columns similar to the originals.  After the four columns were up I happened to look outside and saw them moving one of the columns about five or six inches from where it belonged, throwing off the symmetry of the four columns.  I went out and asked why and was told it had to do with the location of the footings and also that it didn't line up with the steps.  I was not happy with this but that is how it was left.  I later talked to the project manager and he kind of shrugged it off.  Still later I talked to the owner and he said "I don't know what we can do about it now". As it turns out, the steps were installed slightly off to one side, not directly in the middle of the porch as original.  What they should have done was move the steps to their proper position, not move the column.  This came back to haunt us for more that just the aesthetic reasons.  In a few months a sagging spot developed in the floor of the porch.  This was directly in line with where the column was moved to, which was no longer above the reinforced spot the building inspector mandated. Following the installation of the columns, the railings were put in, nothing special, just typical deck type railings with 2x2 spindles.  They and the columns were minimally sanded and then the columns painted, spindles stained.  Another issue seems to be the pitch of the porch.  I'm not sure exactly what the slope away from the house should be, but the decking is completely level.  Water does not drain away from the house, rather it pools on the surface, slowly seeping through the joints of the decking, really not acceptable.  We used Miller back in the mid-90's to have vinyl siding installed and were very pleased with their workmanship.  The porch replacement was nowhere near that kind of experience and I'm afraid I would no longer recommend this company.

Very professional company to work with. Came and gave the estimate when scheduled. My husband and I had a date the work needed to be completed by and Miller builders met that date. They did a beautiful job. The worksite was clean. Very professional from start to finish. I would recommend them and use them again in the future.

The $2900 amount listed included $1700 for the porch removal and replacement and $1200 for the trim work.  Within a few hours of contacting the company, Gary called back and a date/time was arranged for an estimate.  Gary arrived on time and did not rush.  The estimate was fair and Gary was very knowledgeable about what could be saved from our current airing porch.  We signed a contract based on the estimate and a date for the work was agreed upon.  The crew arrived on time and did a good job.  The removal of the porch revealed some additional damage so rubber roofing was recommended for an additional $300 ($1400 was the original estimate) which we decided to proceed with installing.  The work was done very well and the new porch looks great on our 1927 bungalow.  As a result of the removal of the old porch, we needed to have some trim work redone as well as a few other trim fixes on other parts of the house.  Gary sent out a crew to complete the trim work and again they were on time and did a great job.  We had an arch on the front of our house that needed to be trimmed and the crew did a great job of "keystoning" the trim around the arch to match.  Overall it was a good experience and will try and use them again in the future.

They were professional, and knowledgeable of their craft. If I remember correctly, what I paid was probably what I expected to pay.

My main concern was the repair of my upstairs airing porch. I had called around and either didn't get a response, was told I'd have to wait weeks for someone to come out or got quotes completely out of my price range.  When I called Miller, the nice young woman who answered the phone said someone would get back to me shortly. Less than an hour later, Gary called and arranged to come over the next night.  When he came, we walked around the property and he addressed how they could tackle all of the concerns I had about the exterior of my home - from the airing porch, to the pieces of siding that were gone/falling off, to a front porch post that needed some attention - when I mentioned I was also looking to get a ceramic tub reglazed, he said he could arrange for that through one of their subcontractor - all for the $3500 price (most of the quotes for the airing porch itself were above that). He even agreed to clean out my gutters!!
We arranged for the work to be done at a convenient time.  The airing porch was done in one day.  I was amazed.  I left in the morning with it looking pathetic and came home to an absolutely beautiful porch.
Another worker came the next day and finished the rest of the work.  The work was extremely well done. They matched the siding as best as could be expected (the siding is VERY old and Gary had told me the color match would not be exact, but it looks fine to me). When all was done, the site was completely cleaned up.  During the second day, Gary and his brother came to check on the work and make sure I was satisfied.
All in all, I feel very lucky to have found them.  I intend to contact them in the future about some other projects that I have. Thank you Miller Builders and thank you Angie's List for helping me find them. I got my money's worth for my annual fee from this project alone.
[Also, the tub refinishing was also beautiful and professionally done by Tub Masters - I'll be writing a review for them under their listing]

Bottom layer was cedar, which I found out was very difficult to remove. The crew was great! Kept to schedule, worked long hours when weather cooperated, always left yard clean, easy to have around, patient with my questions. A lot of cedar dust ended up in the attic, but they took care of most of what was accessible. (My husband and I cleaned up the finer details.) Had a minor leak plus a frost in attic problem later, which they attended to immediately and fixed. This house had been leaking in a strange place for over 30 years, the former owners never found the cause nor could I. But it is now fixed after some investigative and professional work was done high up on the house, not even directly on the roof! The attention to detail by the company and crew is amazing! I worked with VP Gary Paler and his foreman Tom. They are the best, always sending out people who specialize in the issue being dealt with and overseeing the end product. It was a large check to write, but worth every penny!

Things went great! They gave us a reasonable estimate, though it was more than what we got from other contractors. We chose to use Miller Builders because we felt they would do an excellent job and they lived up to our expectations. They were worth the extra cost. They were very responsive to any questions or concerns we had during the process. The showed up on time and cleaned up after themselves when they were done. I would recommend them to anyone needing work done on their home.

They look really nice. They did a really good job! There were two guys and they worked for 8 hours on the steps. I even tipped them! About 4 or 5 different guys did the bathrooms. They came when they said they would and were on time. I would hire them again!

The experience was fine. The only thing I could fault them with is that I wasn't specific enough. I wanted it sanded so I could paint. I did get things settled with them and they did sand it. The owner was very nice about it. The workmanship was fine, and they did it in a timely manner.

MY OVERALL EXPERIENCE WAS GREAT! I WILL SURLEY USE MILLER BUILDERS IN THE FUTURE TO REPLACE ALL MY WINDOWS. RAY WAS EXCELLENT. HE EXPLAINED WHAT WAS NEEDED. WHEN I CALLED FOR AN ESTIMATE, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAME OUT AND MET ME PERSONALLY. HE WALKED ME THROUGH EVERYTHING AND AFTER HE EXPLAINED THE SERVICE HE GAVE ME A WRITTEN ESTIMATE. HE DIDN'T TALK OVER MY HEAD WHICH WAS VERY IMPORTANT. RAY WAS EXCELLENT ABOUT CHECKING UP ON THE WORK THAT WAS BEING PERFORMED. HE CALLED DURING THE PROCESS TO ASK ME HOW I FELT ABOUT THE SERVICE I WAS RECEIVING. MOST IMPORTANTLY, HE CAME BACK TO MEET WITH ME AFTER THE WORK WAS DONE. MY NEIGHBORS WERE REALLY IMPRESSED. THE CREW CLEANED UP SO WELL THAT I COULDN'T TELL THAT THEY WERE EVEN THERE.
