Framing Service
This is written is response to two recent coupon ads, for Michael's, on S. 27th St. In the first ad, it stated they were giving "40% off on ANY one regular price item." It excluded sale and clearance items. On selecting one such item I was advised by the sales clerk that the item, a book, was not eligible for the discount. I asked if it was a sale item or a clearance item, and she said it was not, but that if I read the fine print on the advertisement I would notice that the offer excluded books and magazines. As for the extra fine print, the items exuded consisted of no less than 24 items and services, which pretty much covered just about everything in the store. A similar coupon boldly claimed that the customer would receive a 30% discount off the "ENTIRE regular price purchase." As with the other ad, the exclusions we many and rendered the coupon useless.
Given that Michael's settled a $1.8 million dollar lawsuit back in 2011 in New York, because they had for years duped consumers into thinking they were receiving huge discounts, when in fact they were simply paying the regular store price," you would think they would be a lot more cautious in what they tell their customers. One can argue that in the current situation the exclusions were in fact listed in the advertisement's fine print, however using words like ANY or ENTIRE in the ads is highly deceptive and could have easily been avoided by simply saying that they were offering a discount on SELECTED MERCHANDISE.
Then, too, it can always be dismissed because no harm was done because you didn't have to purchase anything on discovering that the ad was bogus, but from my viewpoint, aggravating one's customers does not fall under the category of good business practices.
