Replacing your home's sewer system is an awful project, but I can't imagine a more competent and professional team to take this on than Jeff and his crew. They are highly competent, fast, and courteous. Each night they cleaned up and reinstated full sewer capabilities. Badger Underground has the equipment to do the job right, and that is important in terms of the speed of the project and the ability of the crew to respond to every unseen contingency (there always are surprises to be found in old homes like ours). In our case they needed to cut into the street in addition to the basement concrete. They completed the entire project, beginning to end, in just 3 days. They utilized the "pipe bursting" method of replacing the lateral line which, if it fits your circumstances, is the way to go. Our lateral passed beneath a very large maple tree in our yard, and we worried what the traditional trenching process would do to the health of the tree. Using the pipe bursting technique allowed us to avoid the need to trench into your yard (think of it as micro tunneling). It did mean, however, that they needed to cut into our basement floor, so you need to decide which is the lessor of two evils. In our case, the basement was the preferable environment to disrupt. (Note: you can witness the pipe bursting process on a video on YouTube). They also replaced all of the cast iron pipes under our basement, which contributed to the cost as one would expect. Even so, the trench that was cut in the basement (to remove old pipes and to install new) was covered with new concrete on the afternoon of the third day. Wow! These men work hard and they know what they are doing. Oh, and Jeff is accessible. The company phone number is his cell phone and he answers it where ever he is when it rings. In summary: our sewer problem was horrible and the resulting project was very extensive, extending from one end of our basement to the other, then all the way across street to the main. The challenge was huge and it necessitated a variety of big, exotic equipment. So while I don't like to spend that kind of money, it was easy to see why the costs were what they were. But it was done in 3 days, my yard was totally unharmed, and I can sleep at night knowing I have at least a one hundred year solution.
1. Timeliness: They were here when then said they would be here and worked overtime to get a temporary sewer connection up and running on the first day. It was such a relief to be able to shower, wash dishes and flush toilets again.
2. Honesty: They didn't always have good news, but they were very straightforward in explaining my options and their recommendations. I got no sales pitches, just good information.
3. Expertise: I am semi-retired and was able to watch them all of the first day. I learned that digging up old sewer lines is full of surprises. They handled every one of them well and knew exactly what to do. They replaced the old pipe with new heavy-duty PVC from the house to the main sewer line.
4. No price surprises: Their bid included all costs--city fees, temporary sewer connections, digging out more roots than expected, etc. It covered everything from cutting a hole in the street to finishing off their excavation with topsoil. Not all the bids I got were all inclusive. And Badger was willing to warranty their work.
If you're looking for work on a sewer lateral, make sure you understand the difference between replacing tiles, replacing the sewer line with Cast-in-place piping (CIPP) and pipe-bursting pipe-replacement technologies. Different companies bid different things. Badger has used pipe-bursting technologies for many years and is obviously an expert at it.
