We needed to replace our existing closed front porch and started getting estimates from larger companies that were outrageously quoted so we decided to look into local, smaller construction companies. Because of the time of year, it was hard to get quick responses, but we did hear back from All Home and Property Care. We were able to meet that evening with Richie, the owner of the business. Our first impression was positive and he seemed knowledgeable with what needed to be done. He gave us a ballpark range which was an amount we deemed fair since my husband said he could help out. My husband and I did research on his business, read online reviews (mostly google and Facebook) which showed pictures of prior jobs which were quite impressive. It took about a week to get the quote finished and we agreed to hire him after confirming his licencing. He met with us about a week later (on a Tuesday) to collect 1/3 deposit and told us he would be over Friday to start project. Two weeks went by and we did not see him, he sent a few texts after we made demands and he finally responded he had an unexpected death in the family. My husband and I are very reasonable and we gave him another chance after he said he would begin the job the following Monday. That Monday came and went, no sign or phone call from Richie. We finally got a response late in the week with a apology and stating we were "top priority" and he would have his crew over Friday to start demolishing porch. My husband had done most of the existing removal while waiting for answers from Richie. I would say 65% of the initial demolishing was done by us. That Friday a man and woman did show up to the house to begin what was left of removing the old porch. My husband was concerned about the knowledge of the "crew" that showed up. They did not have any answers for us and we assumed they were the parents of Richie. They did put about 7 hours in Friday and again on Saturday but they were not quick. We had asked several times when we could expect to hear from Richie and we never got a response. We had put several texts in to Richie, again with no reply. This was beginning to become a nightmare and causing a lot of stress in our household. My husband had o obtain the building permit and draft the plans for our project himself. The following week we received a text from Richie stating he wanted to stop by to talk to us about the plans for the remainder of the porch, we felt as if we did not have a choice since he already had taken money from us. We were very upfront in texts and told him if he was unable to complete job, we would except our deposit back minus the work his parents did. We waited for him to arrive to talk to us that evening, his wife (who we never met) showed up at the door. She explained that Richie was arrested a couple weeks ago and would be in jail for 60 days. I did not feel it was any fault of hers, so I let her know we appreciated her honesty and asked how we can expect the money repaid. She insisted she did not have any money and would have to speak to her husband about arrangements to repay it. This was 2 weeks ago, we have not heard anything since and we have continued moving ahead with the project ourselves since we had lost money we gave Richie as a deposit. This has been a nightmare and we do not know where to go to get our money back without extra court costs.
