The contractor quoted a cedar deck with 20 ft. boards and showed up with 16 ft boards without asking whether that would be acceptable or not. The deck was completed two weeks late of when it was supposed to be completed. The seams were not staggered. The seams were done in such a way that they formed a box looking seam along each side of the deck for a length of about three feet each. It looked terrible. The screws were not lined up along the entire length of the deck. The spindles were not spaced evenly and were not cedar but treated wood instead. The railing was not level. The top portion of the railing was made from a 2x4 that had been ripped down the middle. The posts were also made from treated wood painted to look like cedar. The railing was very unstable and poorly attached to the deck. I was having a brick patio built during the same time and wanted the steps of the deck to end where the patio began. The steps of the deck were placed directly onto the brick. The steps were not level. When I pointed out how unlevel the steps looked, I was told that it was due to the bricks being unlevel. I placed a level on the brick to find it perfectly level. When I placed the level on the steps, the bubble on the level was completley off. The deck was also unlevel. I placed the level on the deck in several places and found the deck to be unlevel each time I placed it onto the deck. When I approached the contractor about how bad the work was, he said that he would fix it because his work was gauranteed. He never showed up for eight weeks and never called. I called him several times and he kept assuring me that he would be here to fix it. He still never showed. I asked for a refund and he refused. I am now in the process of taking the contractor to court.
