Veterinarians
My wife and I recently moved to Manitowoc, Wisconsin from Milwaukee. As a dog owners, we sought to establish a relationship with a veterinarian near our new home. My wife, Selena, telephoned numerous area vets for pricing and service information. For the service in question, Manitowoc Animal Hospital quoted $15, lower than other area veterinarian hospitals.
Selena arrived a the facility on time. She immediately noticed the waiting room was poorly lit, was unkempt and carried a strong odor of feces and urine. No other customers were waiting. She checked in with the receptionist and waited about ten minutes until the doctor entered the waiting area. He introduced himself to her by blandly calling her last name, made no eye contact and lead her and our dog to a examination room. He performed the service in her presence without comment, handed her the bill and walked away, total time with the doctor about three (3) minutes. He asked no questions, made no comments and showed absolutely no interest in or concern for our dog whatsoever.
Upon returning to the front desk the receptionist informed my wife the cost of the service; now suddenly doubled from the quoted $15 to $31. Angry, Selena asked for explanation. The receptionist seemed confused and suggested the price difference was due to SALES TAX. Eventually the receptionist determined the final bill was based upon (1) routine office visit combined with (2) expressing anal gland fee.
When originally contacted for its fee schedule, no mention was made of the additional charge. Prior veterinarian practices I have given business charged closer to the originally quoted $15 fee. I have since checked with competing veterinary practices in the Manitowoc area and none charge an additional "office visit fee" for the same service.
Discounting the questionable billing practices of Manitowoc Animal Hospital, the demeanor of the doctor and his staff and the condition of the facility alone would have prevented our return.
