So they showed up around 8 am, and I talked with the two guys, who answered all my questions. They started pneumatically driving in the posts (it's loud!), and it took them about 2 hours to do the 27 posts (about 200 linear feet). Then they used post hole diggers to dig the gate posts and that took about an hour for them to dig and set those in concrete.
Since I am going to be building the fence myself, they were giving me all sorts of great tips and explanations. I couldn't believe that it only took them 3 hours to do all the work.
Side note: it was going to cost $5,786 if I wanted them to install the entire fence, and not just the posts. But the lumber only cost me about $1200, so I figured I could save almost 2000 buy doing it myself. However, if I didn't want to or couldn't do it myself, I do think that price of 5,786 is reasonable.
When I called the salesperson he didn't believe me at first, I had to repeatedly share my concerns; then he tried to suggest that we wanted exactly what they did, which made no sense when looking at the work order. He finally agreed to come out and look at it but wasn't happy about it. When he arrived he admitted to me that the scalloping was poorly executed and told me they would re-cut that.
They did fix the scalloping but it lowered the fence height several inches overall. Not great for privacy which is the reason for the fence.
When we went to paint the fence more sloppy work was uncovered: nails that where applied too close to the center of the boards (causing the boards to start cupping within several days) and mails completely missing structural lumber.
WHen I called him back he immediately took the offensive, telling me that I was just trying to get out of paying them. I had to repeatedly re-assure him that I needed a base level of quality to discuss payment. Finally he reluctantly agreed to send out someone to fix the nailing errors.
NExt was negotiating a new price given all the issues (the sawn off posts, sloppy scalloping that reduced the height and the scalloping going all the way around the perimeter rather than just the front section) which was again a difficult process. At times the supervisor raised his voice and basically threatened to stop the negotiation process which I assume meant he would go to small claims. In WI business names can't be searched on our court records but people's names can, so they have a lot of leverage in people not wanting their reputations soured.
We finally agreed to a reduced price that I had thrown out but frankly in retrospect we just aren't happy with the result. The process was a real mess, and caused a lot of stress for my wife and I.
