Work that was done was done fine. However, when called upon to finish up the job, there was awful, actually nonexistent communication. Agreed to do a couple days' worth of work at my house, a few weeks down the road. Near that penciled in date, they became short on manpower and had to back it up a couple weeks. Sucked, but I told them I'd stick with them. A week out, I reached out to confirm and see what the plan was. No response. The week of, I tried again. No response. Over the course of three weeks, I made numerous calls and sent numerous text messages to the owner, Matt. None were ever returned. I even requested they just tell me No if that's the answer. They didn't even have the professional decency to do that. I lost two months and am still waiting to secure a replacement just because this company could not communicate with me. It is beyond frustrating that businesses can get away with this sort of behavior. Matt, if you're out there, I'd still love to hear what happened.
WE would recommend Selectric and Matt without reservation.
The two electricians that did the work were courteous and efficient. They finished the job in less time than what I was expecting and cleaned everything up before they left.
Next up, they are supposed to come on a Monday to do some finish work with the fridge and lights and don't---they give as a reason that a bigger project has priority. Well, gee, thanks, glad to know that they will get to me eventually. Hope the bigger project at least gets the wiring right.
So, on Friday they come and install under cabinet lighting that with a protruding switch, and two units that are too short to light the space. They install the recessed lighting and the lights flicker--almost like a strobe light. When I turn on the light in another room---not one they have worked on, the lights in the kitchen surge and flicker. A couple of the dimmers don't work. Those are the technical problems. As for fit-finish and cleanliness, the recessed lighting trim has unsightly gaps around the trim. There are some hand print smudges on the ceiling too. There is also a gap around the switch plate for the light switch. There were bits of the packaging left strewn about, and wire ends that were snipped off were not picked up. Where they had to cut there was sawdust--clear that cleanup just didn't happen. And this wasn't a and quot;worked until late, had to rush home at 6pmand quot; kind of thing. I came home to find all these items like this at about 2:30 or 3pm. Of course, its a Friday, so, you know, we will clean up after them, and when they bother to come back, ask them to fix all these things. The icing on the cake and perhaps root of the problem is communication. It does not seem that the job is a priority or one they respect. I am sure they would be fine on a big building work site that is not occupied, where details don't matter as much because its not as personal as someone's kitchen, and where they have a cleaning crew to come in after them.
Update November 2012: after noting some issues, the final work---was installing outlets and trouble shooting the dimmable light issue. The outlets were installed fine, but snipped wire ends were everywhere--including strewn about on my stove. One outlet should have been moved, but that was not done. Finally, trouble shooting the dimming lights was a big zero. They told me that I needed to call the manufacturer. Then I am supposed to guess what kind of wiring they used and whether it is on its own circuit, etc. I have no idea. So I guessed, and you know what? The manufacturer after a five minute call, tells me to use a particular dimmer. This is not the dimmer they installed the first time, or the second time, and of course, they couldn't be bothered to actually call the light manufacturer and get the job done right. So, I go to the hardware store, I buy the dimmer, I install it, and guess what? No more flickering! Seriously, these guys might---ehem, might be licensed electricians that and quot;knowand quot; what they are doing, but they sure do not care. No caring, no service. If your hire these guys, you get to pay them, and you get to do it yourself too! Ridiculous.
Update March 2013: I see there was a response to my review. My update here is to clarify a few things stated in the response. First, and quot;if customer would have told our foreman or called our office, we would have addressed his concerns immediately.and quot; I did. I left letters on the work site and sent emails before posting a review here. Second, I appreciate that the company owner did call, and quot;apologizing for the missed communication between our foreman on the project and our foreman's lack of communication with me here in our office, and also the reasons why we were having issues with his lighting.and quot; The company owner, other than when he came by to do the estimate, was however, never ever on site, never provided me with any sort of and quot;if you have any problems, you can call me directlyand quot; sort of message or even just a business card. Instead I relied on communicating with my general contractor and the foreman--to no avail. Third, the response notes, and quot;We did finally find a dimmer compatible for his lights.and quot; No. No they did not. I did. I found it, bought it, and installed it myself after their failed attempts and non-attempts---see my original update in November about this item. Getting the right dimmer was something they never did---rather they apologized for not doing it. As a side note: the lights I provided were the highest rated lights by consumer reports and the NY Times, not some strange, off-beat, eccentric lighting choice, just the best, most efficient, highest rated lights on the market. But the response infers again--despite apologizing to me---that maybe my lighting choice was part of the problem.
Finally, the response notes, and quot;I think that the straight F rating seems harsh and reflects an unfair rating of our company....[and later] ...the foreman who ran his project no longer works for our company.and quot; I hate to see someone lose their job. I really do. My day job involves trying to get and keep people into good homes and jobs. But maybe that is what needed to happen here. Was a straight F an unfair rating of this company? I was not rating the company's history or future work. What I was rating was my experience. My experience was a straight F. Nothing can change that. They did apologize and apparently have new staff, so hopefully things will be better in the future.
"This post is late in response as we did not know we had any negative reviews on Angie's list until it was brought to our attention just yesterday. In response to this review we would like to say that we have worked with this person's General Contractor for many years (and still are) and have never had an issue with another one of his clients. Next year will be our 20th year in business here in Madison. We have a client list of over 2,000 clients, most of whom are repeat customers. We would not be in business today if we were not a reputible contractor that provides quality work. The project that we did for Mitch was a challenging kitchen wiring was completed without removing the original lath & plaster walls or ceiling. As any remodel project goes, it is dusty & dirty & can be hard to contain. We try our best to clean-up; but in an on-going project with many other sub-contractors working simulaneously, it can be difficult. If customer would have told our foreman or called our office, we would have addressed his concerns immediately. The lights he refers to were purchased by him (at his request) and were not compatible with the dimmers we initally provided. We did not know at that time they required a special dimmer. He mentions that he had to call the manuafacturer himself. That is true, when an owner provides lighting his own, it is up to them to provide us with the correct installtion information. We warranty and do research on any product we provide. We did finally find a dimmer compatible for his lights; but it did take longer than normal to find the correct one. Normally we include & install products that we have tested & used through-out the years & deem reliable to make for a more efficient install. It sounds like from his posting that communication and clean-up were an issue. It has been awhile since that project was completed; but I do however remember calling Mitch and apologizing for the missed communication between our foreman on the project & our foreman's lack of communication with me here in our office, and also the reasons why we were having issues with his lighting. As I mentioned before, his concerns/issues would have been cleared up immediatley if he had spoken to us directly rather than posting complaints on Angie's list. At the end of our phone conversation I was under the assumption we had corected all of the issues and he was satisfied with the end result of the kitchen. I think that the straight F rating seems harsh and reflects an unfair rating of our company. As a side note; the forman who ran his project no longer works for our company. We strive to make all of our customers happy and are very disheartened to learn of Mitch's review of our company and will certainly make communication & clean up priority in the future. Thank you for reviewing our comments regarding the situation. Brian Seliger - Owner"
At the beginning of our wiring on the upper level, my husband , who was going to do some of the and quot;rip out of the old wireand quot; ,tore his achilles tendon and was off his feet. We called Brian and asked for them to come in and do that work, but we needed it done now. He found a way to fit us into his already very busy summer schedule and do the whole job for us. We did all the clean up as a way for us to save some money, which we appreciated. Brian does work as well as his staff and they are all a pleasure to have in the house, easy going and happy attitudes. This is very much appreciated especially when doing a big renovation, when the owners of the house can be feeling overwhelmed and tense. We highly recommend this company.
"I was just made aware yesterday that we had postings on Angie's list that were negative. This project was done so long ago that I do not remenber all the details. I did pull the invoice from our files and noted that I sent him a note of apology on it that we did not get to his project as soon as he wanted. We also did give him a 10% credit on his bill for the inconvenience. We have been in business for 19 years here in Madison and have over 2,000 clients, many of whom are repeat customers. We strive to make all our clients happy and are dissapointed to read of customer's review. I think the F rating is an unfair judgement of our company. We will take note of his comments though and make them a priority in the future. Thank you for reviewing my comments as well. Brian Seliger - Owner"
