I highly recommend Phoenix Foreign Car repair. They are Madison's closest thing to "Click and Clack" on NPR. They have been honest and understanding while working on my 2002 Subaru Forester. They have also coached me on how to do some simple repairs by myself. I will definitely continue to use them.

I tried to replace the starter on my 2002 Subaru Forester. One of the two bolts that attaches the starter to the engine was frozen and I could not remove it. In fact, while trying to remove it, I rounded-out the head of the hex nut. I took my car to Phoenix Foreign Car Service (without an appointment) and described my problem to the man behind the counter. He asked me where my car was parked, went to it, jacked it up, used his better quality ratchet to “crack” the frozen bolt so it was removable and sent me on my. He did all this in about 10 minutes. He did not charge me for the service. When I objected, saying I had to pay him something, he said I could pay $10. So I did. I drove the car home and replaced the starter.

These guys are wonderful - a great find since moving to Madison with our 10-year old Audi. They are pleasant, easy to work with, never do unnecessary work and charge reasonable prices. In addition, they are always willing to explain what is happening with the car and go over options for fixes in detail. They have often suggested low-tech or low-cost options as the best course of action. Best mechanic we've ever had.

When the brake lights on my 2001 Volvo stopped working, I was hoping it was just a faulty fuse that my husband would be able to fix. When he couldn't find the problem, I just knew it was going to cost a FORTUNE to fix. A friend of mine recommended Phoenix. These guys are FANTASTIC! They fixed the problem and made sure they gave my car a good checkup. I was SHOCKED when I got the bill. They are VERY AFFORDABLE!!! I will never go anywhere else.

(See prev info.) Phoenix saved us money by declining to do an expensive repair, and instead sent us to another shop for a cheaper alternative (after assuring us of its quality).

Bob and Marlene (and former owner Harry) are awesome. (I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Sam yet.) We purchased a used car and had Phoenix perform a post-buy inspection so that we would have a good idea of any issues that are coming up. Bob welcomed my presence, put a flashlight in my hand and we went over the car together: under the car (on jack), under the hood and test drive. I learned a ton about cars in general and my new car in particular. He explained why this particular car needs to have Honda-made fluids and filters rather than generic and showed how/why it will be easy for me to change the oil myself. He's as much a teacher as mechanic.

Unfortunately, Phoenix's location is a bit inconvenient for us so with previous cars we didn't have them do routine maintenance like oil changes. But if there was ever a need to diagnose a problem, we always came to Phoenix, knowing they wouldn't screw us by suggesting needless work.

I've got a friend with an older Volvo that swears by these folks. They treat him well and don't invent things to fix that aren't broken. I called about an A/C problem with my Hyundai, but they do not have equipment for working on A/C. They referred me to Troy Sampson at Madison Automotive on Post Rd and he did a fabulous job. I would also note that they had offered rides to and from the shop, which I didn't use, but I truly appreciated the offer as the shop is a little off the main roads to find a bus or other public transportation. We also talked about other work that may be needed on my car - my car has over 130,000 miles and I was already aware of some other work that probably needs to be done. They were great about explaining what issues they saw, estimated cost for repairs and noted that all the things that might be needed were things that could wait, for various reasons. There was no attempt to sell additional services or pressure to immediately schedule repairs. I really appreciated the time and information they shared and attention to working within my budget. All the folks at Phoenix were terrific. This was my first time using the company and I would definitely use them again and recommend them to others.

It's a small mom and pop operation. I haven't had to take my car in for serious stuff since I got my new car. My exciting story to tell about them was when I had my old car with a 190,000 miles and it was leaking transmission fluid and oil. I asked if I should get a new transmission and he said that I could but instead he could save my money and put it towards a new car. I was really impressed by the mechanic, who could have limped my car along and gotten money out of me for who knows how long. Clearly he doesn't need my business but he wants my business and likes it. He's not just out to squeeze all the money he can out of all his customers.
