I LOVE our new concrete. Cliff gave us what I felt was a very reasonable estimate, showed up when they said they would, showed me why the old concrete cracked and poured new WITH rebar and several expansion joints. I had no idea it would be this attractive and wish I had done this five years ago!
Cliff's quote came in the lowest, and while that was nice, it was not the deciding factor in my decision. Rather, during our discussion, he described the process and materials he'd be using to perform the work, which is more than I can say occurred with the other contractors. The downside of going with Cliff was that he was pretty booked (which I've found to be the case with many concrete contractors), so my job wasn't scheduled until 3 months out. I wasn't in a time crunch, so this wasn't a concern for me, but if this is something that is important for you, just take note to plan ahead properly.
When Cliff and crew came to remove and subsequently replace the concrete, it was all done as he described. Everyone was very helpful in answering all of my questions and the new concrete looks great. From my estimates the concrete ranged in thickness from 4.5 - 6 inches in depth, which was within the specs provided. At this stage, everything is cured and looks great.
Overall I was very happy with the services rendered. As I said Cliff seemed to be the most knowledgeable of the work being done (probably because he was also involved with most of the work itself), and he also came in the cheapest. If I have any future concrete work to perform, I will definitely be giving Cliff a call.
Roughly 2/3 of our concrete driveway had cracks and needed to be replaced. Cliff was very responsive in providing a quote and offered a very reasonable price. He was also very flexible in scheduling the work - they got us on the books quickly, then rescheduled at our request without complaint, then stayed in touch to offer earlier dates as they finished other jobs. They were very responsive and courteous to our needs.
The work itself was completed promptly and looks great. Cliff answered all of our questions and treated us with great respect while at our property. He also provides detailed instructions how to maintain the concrete, particularly during the first month and the first winter.
I really can't say enough about Cliff's expertise and willingness to take on this project.
It was stressful for me as a home owner because they were pumping 6 tons of concrete
down a steep bank almost 180ft.
My GC oversaw the work as we were under strict code guidelines. He, too, was very impressed with Cliff
and told me that Cliff will be his go-to guy for any concrete projects that he has in the future.
I should mention that Cliff did a garage floor and driveway for me just a couple of months earlier
and that went so well that I recommended to my GC that he contact Cliff.
I could go on but, I think you get the idea.
As soon as the frost was getting out of the ground (or at least trying to), I got an email from Lisa telling me we were on the schedule. We were told our instillation date and she sent over the "proper care of your new driveway" form which had many helpful suggestions to keep the concrete in great shape. That was when we sent the deposit in. With rain in the forecast, Lisa and Cliff continued to keep in great contact with me about when I should expect work to begin, which only was delayed for one day.
The crew showed up exactly when I was told they would be there! Cliff went over all the details with me and even made some suggestions about what he thought would be good small additions to the project (that look amazing!!!!). And his great service didn't end there - he went over how the gutters on the house should be pitched so all the water isn't going to the downspout by the driveway to make sure it would last longer. He made sure I didn't have any further questions, went over when we can drive on it and all the other care details with me again before starting the tear out.
On day two of the install, Cliff explained to me how when he removed the front step, it was concrete poured over old concrete. So to make sure there would be no water going into the house, he added a layer of tin between the house and the newly poured concrete. That was something he didn't have to do, or even tell me about, But he took the time to explain the process and let me know what was there and how they made it 1,000 times better!
I have to say this team is amazing! I am so glad that we found them! Their work is fantastic, Cliff and his crew is great to work with, they did an amazing clean up after install and Lisa is very professional and keeps great contact with the clients.
If anyone is looking for concrete work, I would highly recommend Cliff's!
"Thanks for the awesome review [member name removed]! You were a pleasure to work with as well! Thank you for your business and enjoy your new concrete! Cliff & Lisa"
I did not expect the job to get done so quickly, and it was done well. Happy with the results, and even happier that it was done before winter. I'll be contacting him to do more concrete work in the spring without a doubt.
*Purposely left the cost blank, I don't like to share that info.
"Just to clarify-Cliffs Custom Concrete performed this work in September of 2008 not 2009. We first learned of the crack in the driveway after the winter of 2008, in the spring of 2009. We immediately went over there to access the issue. And yes-we did explain to them that Wisconsin winters can be hard on concrete and the freeze/thaw process can cause cracking. It is the intention that when the ground moves during this process, and the slab moves up and down, that the concrete cracks in the control joints, but this does not always happen and is totally out of our control. With that said, we did offer to replace the cracked section of concrete at no cost to them that spring of 2009 which the member failed to mention in his complaint. They decided it was not a convenient time for them to have us make the repair. Since then we had not heard from them again until August of 2011. Below is a complaint they made to the BBB on August 17, 2011 by the member that states that we offered to repair the cracked section as well as discrepancies between the two complaints. "This company installed a concrete driveway and sidewalk. Within 5 months it had a 20 foot diagonal crack. The owner said it was normal for concrete to crack in Wisconsin. He would replace the cracked area but we could not accommodate having our driveway torn up again that season. Two years later, the driveway crack has widened, other cracks have appeared and whole chunks of concrete can be lifted from cracked areas. " Cliff’s Custom Concrete poured this drive-way to spec. We excavated, placed appropriate sub base, poured a 5" driveway, placed control joints, and applied concrete sealer. We do everything in our power to make sure the concrete cracks in the control joint, but sometimes this does not happen. If they would have had us replace this cracked section that spring at no charge to them, it would not have gotten worse with moisture getting in to that crack causing more damage. If we had control of where the ground pushes up and moves placed concrete thus causing cracking, and we could control the weather elements, concrete would never need replacing. With all of this said, again, we offered to replace the cracked section at no charge to them, it was declined at that time, and we had not heard from them since 2009. We are not quite sure why they feel that this "free" fix would still be available especially when we could have prevented further damage. We feel they are trying to tarnish our reputation at this time for this lead was not even generated from Angie's List in 2008 and the whole story is not being presented honestly. We are a local business; we live here and send our kids to school in this community. We do the best we can to perform quality work at fair prices and we have many satisfied clients as you can see from other Angie’s Lists reviews. We also have a list of references available. Sincerely, Cliff & Lisa Person"
