A few months ago they let a couple adopt a kitten. The couple has been banned by another (a real no kill) shelter, so they went to safe harbor. Safe Harbor had been notified that they were banned, and why they were banned from the other shelter. (Abusing one cat, and killing another.) However, they still let the couple adopt the kitten.
"Thank you for your review, [member name removed]. Safe Harbor Humane Society is an open admission shelter, not a "no-kill" shelter. We do not pretend to be anything other than an open admission shelter. Unlike a "no-kill" shelter, we take in all unwanted, neglected, lost and abused pets in Kenosha County. Every attempt is made to reunite lost pets and to bring injured pets to good health, but not all pets are able to be saved within reasonable means. As an alternative, Kenosha County could only have low admission shelters (shelters that pick and chose which animals to take in) and "no-kill shelters," which would mean that there would be no facility available to take in ALL of the homeless animals of Kenosha County. [member name removed] may wish this for Kenosha County, but we will continue to do everything in our power to save as many lives as possible, something an open admission shelter is in the unique position to do. Our goal as an open admission shelter is to only euthanized for reasons related to health and temperament. It takes countless volunteers and more resources to make this a reality. We hope more people, including [member name removed], can help to make our shelter bigger and better. F rated reviews on Angie's List solely based on the fact that we are not a "no-kill" shelter does not solve any problems. Adoption, volunteering, fostering and donating does solve problems!"
