Mr. Manthei is the front man who does the consultation and estimate. He is older and no longer able to perform the actual re-reroofing. He spent a large amount of time explaining the "how's and why's" and listened to my concerns. Based on his thorough explanations, straightforward manner, and a reference from a neighbor with a large roof, we chose Manthei-Payne. We excepted the bid in late December 2014 with an expected roofing date for the next spring/summer 2015. In late March, the roofers were eager and ready to go. The work began about April 10, 2015. The crew of about 5 men, led by co-owner, Steve Payne, finished the job in about a two-week period, or slightly longer. The work stretched out longer than the "week" estimate, but this is the nature of roofing I came to realize. The roofers were thoughtful, efficient, and quiet. A dumpster was placed in the driveway where shingles could be tossed from the roof directly into it, whereas other old shingle materials were hand-carried to the dumpster. Steve Payne is a very pleasant straightforward guy who communicated well to me the progress of the job along the way. He also asked for my approval for a few of his recommendations such as reattached of gutters, which proved to be a better solution. Payne also discover that the previous home owner or their roofers never properly vented the entire attached garage... Roof vents were placed on the crest of the garage but an opening had never been cut inside to allow flow of air. (Shame on the previous roofers...). Steve Payne cut the necessary openings so now our garage will be less of an "oven" than has been the case up until now. He did not charge extra for this unforeseen work. Thank you, Steve. The roof looks great and we are very pleased! Of course the "proof is in the pudding" and the real test is whether the roof stands up against rain and other weather, and lasts a good 15+ years. But if the quality of the work performed is reflected in longevity of the roof, we will be in good shape. Manthei-Payne also insures their work. If there was any negative, at all, it would be just a few bits and pieces of shingling left on the ground in a few areas (very few...) and a few oil spots in our driveway from the Marling truck which delivered shingles. Steve was careful to put a piece of cardboard down under the truck in subsequent deliveries. I can confidently recommend Manthei-Payne roofers after this job well done!
