We hired Culbertson Construction to replace our roof about 4 years ago. We believed the roof was installed correctly. Recently we had another roofing company out to look at our gutters and they were unable to replace our gutters due to the fact that our rubber roof was installed so poorly. We had another company also assess the rubber roof installed by Culbertson Construction and were advised the entire thing would have to be replaced. The rubber roof is rippled, not smooth. The material is hanging down into the gutters. The termination bars have not been appropriately secured to the house and are pulling off. We contacted Culbertson Construction multiple times via phone, email, and mail with no response. Our concerns have been totally dismissed! Do NOT hire this company!

Several months after moving into my new home, I received a letter dated 10/15/2009 from the general contractor, Fox Valley Homes, stating they were closing their doors but that all subcontractors were paid in full and should honor any warranty issues with work they performed.  Enclosed was a list of subcontractors with contact information and the work each performed.

Culbertson Construction was listed as the subcontractor having performed roofing labor.  Even my untrained eye could tell there were issues with the way shingles were not laying flat and seemed to be raised up.  In addition, unused shingles were left on the roof and not properly cleaned up.

I had initially filed a warranty request regarding roofing issues with the general contractor, Fox Valley Homes; however, upon receiving their letter I used the information provided in the enclosure to contact Culbertson Construction directly with the following results:

  • 10/30/2009:  Sent email ([email protected]) - NO RESPONSE
  • 1/12/2010:  Called (920-362-4204) and left voice message - NO RESPONSE
  • 2/18/2010:  Called (920-362-4204) and talked with Jim whose opinion was that Culbertson Construction should not even have to come to the house and look at the issue as it was most certainly a manufacturing / shingle quality issue.  After asking if the unused shingles left atop the roof were also the manufacturer's fault, he agreed to send someone on Monday of the following week; however, he would not coordinate a time with me so I could be home and indicated that the person stopping over would call me.  I took the day off work to be home no matter what time the person arrived and / or called. - NO ONE CAME OVER OR CALLED
  • 2/22/2010:  Called (920-362-4204) and left voice message asking if they had forgotten about me and were still sending someone over. - NO RESPONSE
I tried contacting Culbertson Construction a couple of other times since then and have received no responses to date.  Most recently, I solicited a roof inspection from an independent, 3rd-party contractor who verified the following installation issues:
  • Lifted shingles due to nails protruding out of shingles; this is a leak hazard.
  • Ice and water shield are missing from the entire roof; these are necessary to prevent ice damming up on roof boards.

No only has Culbertson Construction's workmanship been poor, their customer service practices require significant improvement.  The most frustrating part is that they currently have an ad in a local mailer stating, "WE'LL HELP WITH YOUR WARRANTY" right after the question "ROOF IN BAD SHAPE?!".  I think this should minimally apply to their own work.
