During that initial call, the woman I spoke to said that I probably made things worse by self-treating because, she claimed, no product available to the consumer was effective, and the chemicals Batzner uses are not available directly to the consumer. She said I probably drove the bugs into the walls and they would spread throughout the building.
The guy who inspected my house was on time, courteous, professional and very thorough. He found a "light infestation" of bed bugs in my bedroom only, but not in any other room in my unit nor in any part of the upper unit. He submitted his report and the service coordinator called me back to recommend a series of three chemical treatments, two weeks apart, for both units, at a cost of $500 each, $1500 total. That price was based on a $250 charge for a two bedroom apartment, times two. When I pointed out that there was only one bed in each unit and the other rooms were used as offices, that made no difference. She claimed that the treatment would be the same whether the rooms had beds in them or not. Reluctantly, I scheduled the treatments.
On the day of the first treatment, two technicians arrived in two separate vans - bright red vans that say Batzner Bed Bug Services on the side - and parked in front of my house. (Great! All my neighbors know I have bed bugs!) The technicians who performed the treatment were on time, courteous, professional and thorough. I watched them work and they spent more time in the bedrooms and living rooms than in any other rooms. They didn't treat the kitchens or bathrooms or the basement. When I asked about that they said bed bugs only go where their food (my blood) is likely to be at night. So much for the claim that all rooms require the same amount of time for treatment. They finished treating both units in about 40 minutes. (Were two guys really needed?) I should mention that my home is clean and uncluttered, which makes treatment much easier.
The technicians left me with a written report of the services performed and the chemicals applied - Bedlam Plus and Transport Mikron. I looked them up on the internet and found that they were available for purchase through Amazon.com. So much for the claim that effective insecticides are not available to the consumer. Bedlam Plus comes in spray cans and Transport Mikron needs to be applied with a tank sprayer. I ordered the chemicals and a sprayer for a total of $150, then called and cancelled the other two scheduled treatments, saving myself $1000.
I, myself, performed two more treatments at two week intervals. This was done out of an abundance of caution to satisfy my nervous tenant. My house has been free of bed bugs for almost four months now. In fact, I never received a bite or saw another live bed bug since the day I discovered them and treated my bedroom with the Harris kit from Home Depot. I still have enough insecticide to treat the whole building at least three more times if I get bed bugs again.
I wish I hadn't wasted $500 on that first treatment, but this is what I learned from the experience: Don't panic and make impulsive decisions if you have bed bugs in one bedroom. If your whole house is infested, that's different. If you are comfortable with simple DIY projects, buy your own chemicals.
If you don't want to do it yourself and are willing to pay a couple thousand dollars, Batzner will do a good job. Just don't fall for their fibs and scare tactics.
