In April 2010, Randy Doolittle, owner of Floormasters, was assigned by our contractor for the house remodel to take out a shower insert and retile the shower and add a shower door. At that time, he offered to also install a shower door and said that he would do it at his cost which was $1500 for the shower door. He suggested we pay him directly for the shower door in advance. We were told to pick out the tile for the shower and but not given any price range in which to stay within. We picked out travertine for the walls and piedra river rock for the floor which are small flat stones netted together in 12x12 sheets. It took 3 months for Randy install the tile, and when he did install it, it was the wrong tile. It turns out that he substituted a cheaper tile instead of putting in the style that we requested. He did this one day without notifying us and when we asked him about it he argued that it was the tile we requested. After we compared the original sample to what was installed he reluctantly agreed to tear out and reinstall the correct tile. It took another 2 months (August) before he reinstalled the correct tile and during that time he would show up without the proper equipment and ask to borrow our personal equipment. Hoping it would speed up the process, we lent him extension cords, buckets to mix mortar, a tape measure, a wrench, a 2x4 and a broom. By October he still had not installed the shower door which we paid him the $1500 for. After 10-12 calls, emails, and texts requesting a specific date by which he would complete installation, we asked the Contractor to pull him off the job and get our money back. When the contractor called him, he mistakenly requested that $750 be sent back, not recalling that we paid $1500. Of course, Randy paid back $750 and kept the other half for himself for another month. It wasn't until we threatened legal action that Randy paid back the remaining $750 for the shower door we had originally paid upfront for 8 months earlier. The contractor (Larry Lundberg, Hide-A-Way Builders, also of Crivitz) really hurt his own reputation during this project because of his poor sub-contractor selection. He should have been the one to deal with his sub-contractor. He showed no urgency to force his sub-contractor to get the job done so we had to deal with the guy ourselves. His poor sub-contractor selection was a terrible business decision that negatively impacted our whole experience and caused frustration for over 8 months.
