Finish By Design is much more than a traditional antique and furniture refinishing shop. We buy, sell, trade, and restore many types of architectural products. Our Projects range from, grand pianos, table & chair sets, cabinets, picture frames, mirrors, and all types of antiques, from simple wicker baskets and candle stick holders to statues. We have combined traditional stained or painted finishes with many faux finishing ideas. Our cat threw up in two places on our antique carved oak banquet table. The acid ate into the surface so the table top and 8 leaves all had to be refinished. The table is probably 150 years old, at least. It has always been waxed, so there was that residue in the surface and in the carving that borders the circumference of the table. It needed an experienced artist and craftsman to not change the integrity of the piece. I stopped at the shop and explained my problem. I asked if Jeff could come to our house, 25 miles away and examine the damage and give us an estimate. He drove up in a snow storm in the evening after I'd offered to reschedule! Two days later, he emailed me an estimate and we agreed on the price and timing as this was a rather large project. Plus two of the leaves were not carved, merely spares. First Jeff found a qualified craftsman to laser-rout these unfinished leaves and make sure they matched. Then he lightly sanded and refinished the table top. I thought it needed to be a little darker with some red tones - although through the years the table and twelve high-backed chairs have acquired a few color changes so matching all that is almost impossible without refinishing everything which would have been prohibitive. So, Jeff was trying to match the color of the top and leaves with the carved base and chairs which he did not have. He asked that I bring in the chair that matched the table base closest. Then he suggested giving the carved border a subtle, darker color to match the base and pull it all together. This was perfect.
He really did a wonderful and professional job that enhanced the value of this beautiful carved oak banquet table and chairs. He finished the surface so that now should the cat repeat his behavior, the table will be saved. I couldn't be more grateful!
