We have been having some ?electric power issues? lately. Intermittent (fractional seconds, seconds, minutes and recently hours) motors failing to start or dropping out, lights dimming by half or more, lights out, no water from well, no sump pump, no heat, kitchen stove & cloths dryer at reduced heat. Anything with a computer chip going temporarily or permanently insane. Most of the above I didn?t realize until the problem started lasting for many minutes or hours and I was able to start checking things and troubleshooting. Over the years, I have replaced stuff because I was only seeing a single problem in the short time that things were ?acting up?. I eventually realized that it is half the house that is affected and all the 240 volt equipment ? therefore it must be a power line issue. The solution to it all appears to be in the electric meter box on the outside of the house in the back yard. A loose meter socket connection screw that has probably been loose for 67 years (or since the last service upgrade, at least 31 years) ? it took all those years of minor arching to eat away the wire termination plate and washers enough to cause major arching and periodic loss of one phase.
