days to hear from him (I attribute that to him being busy) having the patience is well worth it.
He poured a sidewalk and slab for me back in 2010 after finding him on
Angie’s List and I was so impressed with the work and the
professionalism of the crew that I told him on completion if I ever
needed more concrete work I would have no hesitation in calling him. At
the time I did not have any more concrete work in mind.
In 2013 I decided to put a concrete slab behind my garage so I called
him. Yes it took a while to get the quote and yes it took a while to get
the work done because he was busy. I had to wait for him to fit in my 2
day job in between the jobs he already had that took a week or more
apiece. But again it was well worth the wait.
I did not even get other quotes. I used to get 3 or more quotes and
usually go with the mid one for any work to be done. But with how hard
it is to find contractors that do good work once I find one I'm not
going to roll the dice and tempt fate. Could I have had it done cheaper?
Maybe. Would it have been as good? Maybe. But I'm not about to gamble
with 10,000lbs of concrete.
I said it in 2010 and I'll say it again, if I need any more concrete work done I'll call Tom. And if I have to wait, so be it.
Tom also gave me a lot of advice on the selection of concrete, time to cure, and other useful information based on my intended use. It is nice to find a contractor these days willing to take the time to educate the customer. Also, the entire crew were pleasant and professional.
If you need concrete work done right, look no further.
I had to change the plans multiple times due to both what we found when we took out the flagstone and what my bricklayer was telling me. Tom was accomdating to all the changes. Both Tom and his son are obviously craftsmen who take pride in their work.
However after the cement was poured there were discolorations that I was told were due to "the sealer" that would fade. They haven't faded yet after 3 months. I'm still waiting to hear back from Tom regarding this.
Even more disappointing was what I was charged for some fieldstone. I should have shopped around more as I found the same stone for one tenth the price at a local brickyard.
Update - Although it took a while, Tom eventually came back and tried to get the discoloration out. When that failed, he tore up the entire sidewalk and repoured the whole length. I then asked about the price of the fieldstone, after checking his records he gave me a rebate. All in all a very fair deal and I intend to use them again and recommend them to others.
The overall is this: If you are looking for a professional crew that takes pride in every step of the project. Give Tom a call.
"In 2006 we poured a new concrete drieway for the members. The following spring he called and informed me that the frost had lifted the first slab in front of the garage and pushed up his siding between the garage doors. Within a month we went to the property, sawcut out the problem areas and repoured those sections. After the following winter he called to tell me that the first slab had raised up and he had traped water in his garage. After the spring thaw the slab settled back down level with the garage floor. At that point I offered to take out the first slab and put drain tile in. The problem was that because of the topography of his land there was nowhere to bleed the drain tile. He talked about getting a trencher to come in and run the drain tile to his ditch. I told him that I would stay with him until the problem was solved and to let me know what he wanted me to do. I excavated and hauled away two tandem loads of wet clay and filled that area with 18 yards of gravel at no cost to the members. The third spring after the drive was poured he called me and informed me that he had gotten another contractor to replace the concrete, after I told him I would stay with him until the problem was solved. The last time we talked I assumed he would get back to me after he had talked to someone about digging a trench for the drain tile. I do feel badly about this, but I also feel I did everything I could to solve the problem."
