About us

Grand piano restoration and rebuilding is my passion. Most frequently I find myself restoring and rebuilding Steinway & Sons grand pianos, though many other piano makes find their way in and out of my shop. In addition to Rebuilding and Restoration, I provide a complete range of piano services including piano tuning and piano related products for my private clientele, schools, churches and music studios. In my career I have also worked for piano dealers of all the major brands of pianos, including: Steinway & Sons, Yamaha, Kawai, Schimmel, Charles Walter, Boston, Essex, Young-Chang, and many others. My Mission: My professional goal is to provide the absolute best quality, professional services to my clients. It is important to me to recognize that every client has different needs, and that one approach to service does not fit everyone. Therefore, when making recommendations for service or materials, I strive to keep the best interests of my clients in mind. Honesty, integrity, and fair-trade practices are guiding principles in my professional and personal life. Award winning.

Bill was very responsive and very sensitive to our feelings and sentiments toward the piano. He answered all of our questions and worked with our limited timeline. I highly recommend Bill and would enlist his services in the future. He is a true professional.

Bill was super. He not only got us onto his schedule last minute and within days of my finding him on Angies List, he braved our street construction and parking woes to get to us! I was at work, but my daughter (adult, the pianist) was home and he spent longer than he should have for this pay getting the old, battered beast of a piano into playable condition so my daughter's weeks at home are enjoyable for her. The piano sounds great again, and he promises to send me a report on the piano and its prospects for health and happiness! I could not be happier with his work.

He arrived on time and performed the service. He had to perform a rough tune first because it was so flat then a full tune. This took 75 minutes. It was well worth the cost, piano sounds terrific. He told us that in the future additional work would be required and he followed up with a detail quote for that work. I am reconsidering him for tuning the pianos at church. Highly recommended.

My experience was good. There were no additional fees to the $135 Big Deal cost. He has been very good. My only negative comment was that after he left, I got a couple of advertisement from him trying to jump-up his business. It was not big deal, but I did not really like it. The cost of service was great. I would consider using his services again if he had a special. I know that what I paid was not his normal rate. So, I probably would if I could get it for the same price.
Response from A440-William R Monroe Piano Services Inc
"Hi [Member Name Removed], I was saddened to read that you were disappointed in any aspect of the service that I provided for you. It is my goal to make sure all my clients receive the best possible service and attention and I'm deeply sorry you felt that you didn't. Even though it was just a B grade, to me, that is a failing grade. However, I think it may have been a misinterpretation of information. When customers purchase a "Deal" from me, one of the things included in that "Deal" is an assessment of the overall condition of the piano. Part of that assessment is a written condition report (either printed or digital) which details any and all recommendations for future service work on any given piano. It is something that I provide as a service to my clients so that they fully understand the condition of their piano and what it would take to make that piano a better performing instrument. I am certain that after our service appointment, the only thing I had sent was this Condition Report - not any sort of advertisement - which detailed any of this recommended service work for you. Had I not sent this report, I would not have been doing what I promised I would do in my Angie's List Deal listing. I am truly sorry that it was interpreted as an attempt to "bump up" my business. It was not. It was provided as a service to you so that you fully understood what condition your piano was in and what it might cost to improve that condition should you so desire. I was sincerely doing everything I could to deliver on the promise I had made to you to provide you with this information, nothing more. Again, my aim is to be as professional and helpful as possible to my clients and I never send any further unsolicited communications to my clients after service. If a client wishes to be contacted for future service I will add them to a list to send reminders to for tuning work for example, but only if that is what they want me to do. I hope this helps to clarify my intentions and my communication with you. My business is built on trust and honest communication and I would never do anything to jeopardize that. I thank you for sharing your experience with me and the Angie's List membership, and hope that after reading this you might feel better about your experience with me and my service."

As soon as I purchased the service on Angie's list, I was contacted by Bill.  We set up the appointment at my convenience and when the time came, Bill was right on time.  He was very professional .  Although I do not know anything about piano tuning, I do know that my piano sounds so much better after the tuning.  I also got to hear some beautiful piano music played by Bill when the service was completed.  I received a written report a few days later of other work that could be done on the piano to bring it to its full potential but was in no way made to feel pressured about doing this.  I would not hesitate to recommend Bill Monroe to anyone to work on their piano--he is an absolute professional and a very nice person!

Great!  Bill was on time, courteous, and personable.  He spent time to educate me about my piano and what I could do to make it better.  He played it after it was tuned and he is quite an accomplished pianist!  He followed up with an email summarizing what was done and what would be recommended in the future.

He was able to schedule an appointment within one week; he showed up on time (a BIG plus); was personable and competent. No surprises -- on the phone he had given me an estimate of the basic cost and worse case scenario costs. The fee was very reasonable and the piano sounds wonderful.

Bill arrived promptly and assessed the work needed.  He then gave an excellent explanation of the instruments quality and idiosyncrasies.  He answered all my questions about the instruments in easy to understand terminology.  Bill completed the tunings and restorations in a timely manner.  The quality of his workmanship is excellent.  I will not hesitate to contact Bill for future tunings and repairs.  He is the best!

Bill is the consummate professional.  He advised us on the purchase of a new upright in 2010 and his assistance with this went above and beyond what was expected.  After the purchase he installed a humidifier and has tuned it ever since. Bill is always prompt, detail-oriented, exacting and personable in his service.  I highly recommend A440.

I live way out in the boonies, so I was thrilled when Bill said he'd come to my house to tune my piano.  I wasn't about to haul it somewhere!  He arrived, by arrangement, before I got home and got to work cleaning and then tuning it.  He had about 20 minutes remaining when I got home.
Because of the horrible shape my piano was in, I was prepared for a browbeating.  Bill took it all in stride and didn't make me feel bad about its condition, which was a huge relief.  He seemed sincerely sorry that he wasn't able to clean off some of the stains caused by mouse urine, which certainly didn't matter to me, and he even joked about my obviously useless cats who didn't do a thing to keep the mice away!
After he tuned the piano and put it back together, he played beautiful music that would have made my piano weep for joy, if it could have.  Once he was done with that, he took it apart again and made some adjustments.  If it were me, I would have said "good enough", but he wasn't satisfied, and made the slight correction that I couldn't hear, but which must have made a difference to his finely tuned ear.
I'm thrilled to have my piano back and I will have Bill back once a year, now that I'm playing again.  I highly recommend his service!

Bill Monroe exceeded our expectations.  He was prompt, professional, and patient with our dog who has some anxiety issues.   He explained everything he was doing and his price was very reasonable.  We explained to Bill that we were having our piano tuned in order to sell it.  He also gave us an appraisal and a detailed list of what needed to be done to our Kawai to bring it back to pristine condition.  We were going to use these documents to aid us in the sale of the piano on Craig's List.  Bill also said he would be available to talk to any potential buyer that had questions.A few days after Bill tuned our piano he came across a potential buyer and brokered a deal for us without a fee.
I called around to some of the bigger business piano companies and one of them would not let me talk to the piano tuner until I booked an appointment.  Apparently they contract out their service calls.  Bill answered my call and all my questions over the phone right away.  We were very happy with the service Bill Monroe provided and would recommend him without hesitation.

He tuned my piano for several years - until I moved and sold it. He also installed a humidifier on this baby grand. We had talked about replacing the pads at some point, but I moved to a smaller place that didn't have room for a baby grand. He's very good!
