In the fall of 2009, a contractor that we had used previously offered to build a pergola for us. His price was very low and we did not question why it was so low. He told us that his reputation with the county was so good that the county had agreed to not make him get a permit in advance of the work. He completed the pergola and was paid.
Questions from the County came immediately. The problems were numerous and serious. The contractor blustered and threatened. It was our fault he claimed. We discovered that he was unlicensed and uninsured. In addition he was being sued by Labor & Industries as well as other taxing agencies. In desperation, we contacted Baxter in June 2010.
Baxter had a crew on site within 24 hours. They met with the county and came up with solutions. The crew was competant, prompt and courteous. They competed repairs and the structure passed inspection. The work took about 2 weeks.
I do have a brief epilogue:
In January of 2012 I asked for an estimate for the installation of a propane fireplace. The estimator gave me some information on building codes that turned out to be almost completely wrong. When I contacted Baxter with questions about their representation of code, they became angry and ended contact. Baxter apparently doesn't like being challenged.
"I am sorry that you feel that one of my employees misinformed you regarding code on the fireplace. I would be happy to talk with you regrading that and would like to hear more about your phone conversation. My name is Darren and I am the General Manager here at Baxter. Your complete satisfaction is a major part of my job. Please call the office @ 509-452-2464 and ask for Darren."
