This is the second time I've used Aadams.
Overall:
This is a great company with an expert team, I would definitely hire them again and would recommend them for any job. You might get a lower quote but I don't think you will find a better crew.
At the time of estimate the time frame was 2-3d and the price was quoted. The rep had suggestions on some other trees we decided to leave alone for now. He gave me an idea of what was going to take place and took care of all the paperwork and got the permits squared away on time and with no issues.
Fir Tree Thinning:
Midway through the main tree job, several other people arrived and thinned the two other large fir trees. This looked like an independent job with a different crew but they shared the wood chipper. The crew did a good job and cleaned up all the debris.
Main Tree:
The crew showed up on Monday and started unloading gear. They advised clearing out more potted plants and deck furniture and moving vehicles and making even more room, so I did that.
This tree was a monster and in very close quarters in the backyard between a shed and a deck, probably more than 80' tall and the largest trunk over 3' across. The crew began by setting up equipment including the chipper and clearing out even more items from the area. Then the climbers went up and started taking down the lower side branches and hauling them off to the chipper. Then the climbers went up and started taking the tree apart from the top down and breaking the fall of the limbs with ropes. This was the most time consuming part and took several days, longer than they had expected. When that part was done what remained was the main trunks stripped of the side and top branches. The climber then started cutting the main trunks from the top down and dropping them into the yard while the rest of the crew hauled off the wood. They worked from there down and one main large trunk remained standing at about 15', they estimated 10,000 lbs or more. This had to be dropped precisely into the space between the deck and the shed without much room for error. The crew dropped it exactly where they wanted with no problems and proceeded to slice it into sections and haul it off. The final day the stump was ground up and all that remained of the tree was a big pile of chips where the tree once stood.
What went well:
The company stood by their estimate even though the job took 5 days not 2-3
Safety was a clear priority for the crew - both for people and property
The crew took the time to alert the neighbors about what was going on.
The crew kept me up to date on what was happening and when things changed
The crew was professional, courteous and very skilled
Cleanup was thorough, all wood and branches were removed
- What could have gone better:
- Heads up on the amount of landscape damage would have been helpful. The damage is unavoidable with a tree that large but advance notice would have allowed relocating and saving some of the plants and possibly clearing or covering some or the borders and walkways to reduce the amount of landscape re-work needed.
What you should expect if you are doing something like this:
The chipper and chainsaws are extremely loud and sustained, pets will panic, neighbors should be advised ahead of time.
There will be a lot of trucks - chipper, trailer to haul wood and the road may be partially blocked.
Someone should be home in case something unexpected happens, a decision needs to be made or you need to move a vehicle
The crew may need access to other yards, again neighbors should be advised ahead of time.
Plan on significant landscape re-work afterward between the nearest access road and the tree and around the tree. The crew needs to drive heavy equipment through to the backyard to remove the large pieces and grind the stump. A crane may be an option for some locations to reduce this depending on obstacles and distance from the road.
