We then got a call saying they couldn't supply the pool fencing. This was due to their supplier being taken over by a "mega-corp" and forcing all agents to re-apply to be a dealer. While not their fault, and I had sympathy with their plight, they didn't offer any "plan B" solution. You can buy these fencing panels at Home Depot, and when I suggested that to them, they replied "but we wouldn't make enough money on that" - now this was for 1 part (worth about $2800) of a $8k job, and they had also earned $4k from building a retaining wall as sub-contractor for our pool guy. I would have been prepared to have a discussion about a reasonable margin for them but the attitude was "we're not interested in fixing this".
It took our pool contractor tearing them a new you-know-what about treating a referral of his that way to get them to come back with a solution - they had found an approved dealer who would sell them the materials at a reasonable price, and they could honor the original quote. All good, and back on track. They came and installed the other parts of the fencing job, and there were a couple of niggles there (when they dug the post holes they threw the dirt against the side of the house and left if there, and they left the old cedar fence panels sitting on the grass, killing an area of our lawn), but the quality of the work completed was solid.
A few weeks later, just before they were due to start installing the pool fence, we get a call saying they can't honor the price, and they need an extra $1,000, as the supplier changed his pricing on them. Despite the anger we felt, we had no option but to agree due to needing the job complete asap to meet code/permit inspections and an upcoming vacation rental client. They agreed to have the job finished in a week. Well, that took nearer 4 weeks, including many "silent periods" when they wouldn't take or return calls. When finished, the quality was good, but the effort involved and the attitude of one of the sons was not a good experience.
Overall, the quality of the finished fence work is good, but the hassle involved, and the attitude along the way made it a very frustrating process. If you have a very simple vinyl project and the price is right, you're probably ok, but I wouldn't work with them again.
