Dr. Jarecki explained to me how serious cat bites can be, because cats carry very dangerous bacteria in their mouths. Additionally the bite is usually a deep wound and, especially on the hand, it comes in contact with ligaments, bones and blood vessels, which are then infected. She told me that often people have to be hospitalized, and given daily intravenous injections of antibiotics.
She started me on an antibiotic injection, and I had to return every day for the next 3 days for another injection. The next day when I returned, she thought that my hand looked better, but consulted with another doctor as to whether the improvement was enough to continue with the current course of treatment rather than hospitalization. They decided to continue with the current treatment, and after the 3 days had passed my hand was back to close to normal. I then was given several more days of an oral antibiotic, after which my hand was healed and completely normal.
