AMERICAN ROOFING
About us
My wife and I started American Roofing on January 1, 1983. Over the years we have grown to be the largest and best roofing company in North Central Washington. We have installed close to 6,000 roofs, mostly here in the valley. We have nine employees and believe in training good men and treating them well. This brings the same men back to work for us year after year. Remember, we beat the tar out of the competition!!!

"Thank you for your constructive criticism. We will Definitely work on improving our response time to both our current and future customers. We do try hard to be the Best in every part of our business. We do appreciate your comments!"
Mid-August: American Roofing took a 30% deposit.
Late September Ron Skaggs (owner) sent email explaining the delay was due to weather and personnel, but assurances were given that I was 5 jobs out This is a direct quote..." I have gone to an extra length explanation since you seem a little anxious about your new roof."
Late November: roofing job completed. They called me within days of the completion and expected final payment in full, even without owner inspection.
December: homeowner inspection. (1) several critters (squirrels and rats) took residence in the attic between the roof and the ceiling of the apartment during the 3 months of holes in the roof, (2) there was rain damage to the apartment drywall during the 3 months of holes in the roof, and (3) a leak was induced into an adjacent porch roof, which did not leak before the main roof installation.
In summary, they: (1) tie up your money for a long period of time, (2) do not communicate that the job is going to take 3 months when you give them your deposit, (3) do not communicate when they are continuing to run behind, (3) do not take ownership of the property by recommending/performing interim mitigation because they are backed up, (4) stand behind their work when they induce additional issues (critter invasion, drywall destruction, induced adjacent roof leak).
In a word, unprofessionall.
"Our company had several roofing projects scheduled prior to homeowner. We install roofs in the order in which we receive a signed contract and deposit. We could have started the job a lot sooner, but the highway was closed for several weeks due to forest fires and heavy smoke in the area. When we started customer's job, it took approximately two weeks from start to finish. We protected the roof from the first day on the job through to its completion. The rodent droppings in the attic accumulated over decades. Also, our company foreman found several areas where old roof had been leaking for years due to poor installation. Customer specifically asked us not to do any work whatsoever on the small lower roof at back of the house. A tree had fallen on the house and garage with such force that it actually penetrated the existing metal roof in several places. The homeowner complained that the small roof never leaked before. Well, it had never had hundreds of pounds of tree and limbs crash into it before. Complaint was worded as if it took three months to complete re roof project. Actually, it took about two weeks. I tried to reason with the homeowner, but they only wanted a free repair. Homeowner said that he would "slam" us on Angie's List if we did not do a free repair for them. The homeowner signed our contract that clearly states "balance due upon completion". They took thirty three days to finally pay."
The crew showed up at 7:30 every morning, by 7:45 the work began. We were impressed with the get it job done attitude of the crew. In speaking with a few of the workers I learned these guys are long time roofers and most have been with American Roofing for years, they knew their stuff. Removing the old roof was a messy affair it but was cleaned up every night. Someone from the crew checked in with me every night to make sure everything was in order.
There was a slight problem with a couple of our skylights and 2 roofers stayed 2 extra days to ensure everything was perfect with the job. I found the work here well above and beyond, to make it right.
For the size, scope and price of this project we were very happy with the process and the finished result. My wife selected American Roofing based on their positive Angie's list reviews.
They were very helpful by giving a list of addresses of homes the company had roofed with the color name. Seeing the color on an entire roof compared to a small sample helped in deciding a roof color.
The installation crew did a great job while working in cold weather. Two days to remove old roof and to put on the new one. Large plastic sheets were put down to catch old roofing pieces so they were not left in flower beds, etc. The new roof looks so much better than the 30 year old roof it replaced.
It was still raining and freezing. I called American Roofing. Within the hour Ron Skaggs was here to assess the damages..
Within a couple of hours two of his men were here to repair. They were able to use left over shingles.
The charge was very reasonable for taking care of an emergency including two trips by the company to assess and do the work. .
My report is a longer one, to cut to the chase, jump to the last paragraph for a summary. The details are in the middle.
The service I was looking for was a removal and replacement a 20 year old composition roof on a 1600 sq ft single story home in the Chelan Area. This is a pretty basic job for a roofing company. I researched Angies list and personal referrals and received quotes from 4 contractors. American Roofing (AR from here out) was not the cheapest but based on their tract record on Angies List I decided to go with them.
Things could have gone better. To make my review easier let me break down the highlight and lowlights
PRICE
AR did not come in as the lowest quote, asked to have price match other quotes. AR dropped the price $100. Not impressed. Wish I had remembered to mentioned the 10% Angies list coupon at the time
PUNCTUALITY
This is a big one for me. The week before, I was told the crew would arrive at 7:00 AM the first day to start. 7:00 rolled around on start day, no AR, 8:00 came and went, no AR. I called the office and was told they were on the way. A little after 9:00 they arrived. 2hrs late. When I inquire about the delayed start I was met with attitude from the owner, Ron.
At the end of day 1, I asked what time the crew would start the next day. Again I was told 7:00. They ended up arriving at 8:30AM the next day. 8:30 is not a bad starting time, but don’t tell me 7:00 and show up 1.5 to 2 hr late each day.
PRODUCT INSTALLED VS BID
In my quote for the roof replacement I requested and paid for 30lb felt vs 15lb felt. I upgraded and for lead roof jacks vs no-claulk, and I upgraded to Ridge Vent vs basic can vents.
After the crew had taken off the old roof, they broke for lunch prior to starting the new felt installation. During the lunch break I looked over the inventory of material they had brought out to my house. I noticed the felt they brought was 15lb felt, not the 30lb I paid for. They brought out can vents, not ridge vents, and they brought out no-caulk roof jacks not lead jacks.
I brought this to the attention of the crew when they returned and they had to call Ron the boss (who was not on site) and I had to discuss this with him. Rons response was that 15lb felt was standard and met manufacture’s recommendations. I had to reference the quote where it stated 30 lb felt before Ron agreed. The crew stopped the installation for an hour while the 30lb felt was brought out.
Had “I” not brought this mistake to AR attention when I did the wrong product would have been installed on my house. LET THE BUYER BEWARE!
QUALITY OF INSTALLATION
The tear off went fine and the crew took good care to protect my house/gutters and my landscaping. Once the correct felt came out that was installed properly. The Ice and Water shield was installed properly on the eaves and valleys but when I inspected the roof at the end of first day I noticed that the Ice and Water shield had holes and tears in many, many places. What good is an Ice and Water shield if there are HOLES in them??? When the crew showed up the 2nd day I brought this to their attention. The answer I got was “we will patch them”. I was not pleased with that answer, but accepted it as I was told it was the right way to fix the problem. I walked inside, thought about it, and after 10 minutes came back out and insisted that they “re-roll” the entire valley and not just patch it. The crew agreed to do this. I brought this to Ron’s attention at the end of the project and his comment was “you have to re-roll the entire valley”. Why does his crew not know this? Again, if I am not closely monitoring the project I would have had a roof installation with HOLES in it.
CLEAN UP
AR did a good job of clean up for the most part. The landscaping was cleaned; all material (beside a broom they left behind) was cleaned and packed away. You would not know they were there for two days when they left. That is a good thing. After they left I inspected the roof, and noticed all the gutters were cleaned very well, except the gutter on the back of the house. The entire 75’ run of gutter was full of garbage. Not a huge deal as they did a good job on the rest of the gutters, but it does show an overall lack of consistent quality. When I mentioned this to Ron at the end of the project, he did go on the roof and take care of the problem. Ron also cleaned up the hydraulic fluid stains the AR roofing truck left on my driveway. That was very much appreciated.
------- CONCLUSION-------
Over all I was not impressed with AR and I would not use them again and I would not recommend them to my friends. My biggest issues are the lack of a quality/professional installation, and the fact that the roof I ordered and paid for would not have been installed had I not paid close attention to what the contractor was doing.

"[member name removed], I have been the Owner/Manager of American Roofing for over thirty years. It has always been our company policy to take the high road when dealing with our clients, We just grin and bear it even when a few of our clients are in error. What you have done far exceeds anything I have encountered in my thirty years of business. Therefore, I am compelled to answer your charges. It is no secret you felt extremely slighted because I had a Hispanic crew install your new roof , but did you have to stoop so low in "getting even" with me by giving me such a derogatory review on Angie's List? We have lived in the Wenatchee Valley for forty years and have owned and operate American Roofing for over thirty years. We have installed over 5,800 roofs. That equates to slightly over two million square feet of roofing. Your derogatory words will have little or no meaning to people who know our company and me personally. I forgive you for your fabricated lies against our company, but your extreme hatred toward Latinos is absolutely appalling. That is unforgivable. My Latino crew is dedicated, hard working, and are very valuable employees. They are also my friends. How you could be so mean spirited is beyond me. All I can say is shame on you. There is no room in this world for racism. Ron Skaggs Owner P.S. Your new roof looks Beautiful."
"It was a pleasure to work with (member name removed). Both her daughter, who spoke with me, and (name removed) were delightful. We would never even think of taking advantage of an elderly person, or anyone else for that matter. We are all accountable to each other for our deeds. Again, Thank you (name removed) for being an awesome customer! Sue and Ron"
"(member name removed), The guys enjoyed working with you. We are happy when you, are customer, are happy with us. Thank you for taking the time to write a review for us. Ron and Sue"
"[member name removed], Thank you for your very kind words. It has been a pleasure working with you and a very big Thank You to you for your Service to our country! Ron, Sue and the Crew"
"Thank you Member for your good words. Our crew is very skilled and knowledgeable. We are sorry that Ron was not able to come by during the job, however our foreman Tito has been with us for sixteen plus years and oversees many of the jobs for us. If there is ever anything that requires Ron's attention on a job, he will drop whatever he is doing and come right over. Again, we thank you for choosing us for your roofing needs. Sue"
The estimate was in my budget and called him to 'get 'er done' and made a deposit payment of $700. The crew did and it looks great. His crew knows what they are doing and completed the work in two days including all the cleanup from the removal of the flat roof area.
The whole project went very well with no surprises.
"It was a pleasure to work for Member again. He understood what we proposed to do and treated the men very good. Thank you Member for taking your time to write a review for us. Ron and Sue"
"Thank you Member for the kind words. We will always do our best to do the job right and promptly. We are not always the cheapest but we are not the most expensive either. We are always fairly priced. Again Ron and I say Thank You for taking your time to write a review for us. We do appreciate it very much! Sue"
"Member, It was a pleasure working for and with you on the challenges involved in helping you remedy the mold problem while we replaced your roof. You were great to work with. Thank you! Ron and Sue"
