I called Dan's Top Notch when my furnace, which is located in the attic, started leaking water through the ceiling. Kyle showed up and after he looked at the system told me he wasn't certain what the issue was. He called someone and sent pictures of our furnace then told me there was nothing he could do. The system wasn't installed properly and needed to be replaced then charged us $102 for that advice. When I asked how much it would cost to fix it he wasn't able to quote me a price but told me someone else would come out to give us a quote for a new system....By the way that's $102 for the advice. This was a service call and even if the system should be replaced either fix the system or tell me you'll have to come back to finish the job with additional parts. There was no other option because he told me he couldn't do anything else. We started talking about payment and it became pretty obvious that it was going nowhere fast and Kyle was nothing but the unqualified guy in the field and arguing with him was pointless. The funny thing is I had Dan's Top Notch out the preceding 3 years in a row to conduct annual maintenance/service and cleaning of the system which according to them includes checking that the system is running at peak efficiency. Nobody ever mentioned the system was installed improperly and nobody ever told us the system needed to be replaced even though they were looking at the furnace which was what ultimately failed. I will never use Dans again and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND AGAINST ANYONE EVER USING THEM!!! TERRIBLE SERVICE AND THEY HAVE ZERO INTEREST IN DOING RIGHT BY THEIR CUSTOMERS!!! BUYER BEWARE

Was able to get in on special, $69.95. Kyle called to let me know he was on his way. Arrived on time and did a thorough check of both heat pump and furnace. Replaced a capacitor in furnace, which was extra. Showed me what to do to clean heat pump when it gets warmer. Also told me about using emergency heat setting when it gets really cold so as not to strain heat pump. Professional and courteous service.

They were able to set an appointment within just a couple days. Mike arrived after a long journey from the Vancouver, WA area to our home in the Beaverton/Aloha, OR area which is quite a trek. Had the issue identified in minutes, fixed the leak, added new refrigerant, and tested everything out to make sure there were no more leaks. He was done in about an hour and a half or so. The AC blows cold like a champ now.

They were prompt with estimate and appointments, very polite, informative and clean. David Simms and Son were the electricians and did a beautiful job as well. Kyle gave a detailed explanation of the new WiFi register and use without WiFi. They were done in about 6 hours. They were unaware of their listing on Angie's List as we could not contact them through the site, but called their business and went in to request a visit to give us an estimate, so called them at the business for a quote.

From the initial bid to the actual install everything went well. Everyone was professional, friendly, polite, and patient with our many questions. They also handled all the warranty and rebate paperwork which we really appreciated. We could not be happier with Dan's.

"Our furnace was 19 years old. It still functioned fine but I knew it was only a matter of time. I contacted Dan's Top Notch for a quote. Jake was extremely professional and kind and did not try to upsell me. The two guys who did our installation were friendly and polite as well. They took time to answer my questions and were very considerate of their noise level because we had a napping baby. New furnace seems to be working great!"

The unit had the wrong size motor. Our service guy, Mike, did an outstanding job of diagnosing the problem and his knowledge of Carrier products helped him figure out the issues (previous owner installed the wrong motor and it wasn't matching what Carrier said should be installed). He's going to come back and finish the repairs, but we couldn't be happier. I called yesterday and they showed up today, exactly on time. Excellent service, very professional and we know we're in good hands. The service call is all we've paid for so far....

They were excellent. Dan's was up front about costs and let me know what the fee would be to evaluate and diagnose the problem. I met Ray, I hope remember his name correctly, at my house around noon. He opened up the AC unit and diagnosed the problem very quickly. It was a bad capacitor. Ray was great, very direct and straightforward. The AC was up and running in no time, making my family very happy!

The process went very smoothly from bid to installation.  Everyone was professional and kept us in the loop throughout the installation, checking each step of the way to be sure everyone was on the same page.  The installation took longer than expected, but they stayed will into the evening to get everything done.  Cleanup was perfect.

They have this little one man office as far as I know. I paid $6000 for an outside heat pump and for two ductless heaters. I would rate them highly and will continue to use them in the future.

"Hello Member, Thank you for your business. With this low score it would seem we should have done better as far as the heating system in your house. I am not sure what the problem is but your business and good reports are very important to me. If there is anything you need with this new system or anything I can to to make our service better please give me a call. (360) 835-9364 Danny D Reude Owner. Dan's Top Notch Heating and Cooling."

On the third system, they added a condensate pump which started to fail about 6 months after it went in.  It only occasionally made noise, and I waited to contact the company until I had definitive symptoms.  When I called, I was told the warranty had expired less than a month prior.  They tried to charged me for a "do nothing" service call for $85.

They then said it would be over $300 to diagnose and fix the the problem. I had 2 other systems installed by Dan's, and didn't mind paying more because their sales staff seemed very professional.  It is still broken waiting for me to find a company that I can trust.  They were fine as long as everything worked well, but when it comes to follow up service, they were very disappointing.  I would never recommend them to anyone.
Response from Dan's Top Notch Heating & Cooling
"This particular system utilized a mini-pump that is used for the Ductless Heat Pump systems. These mini pumps have a very small water reservoir and components. We provide a 1-year labor warranty and extend the manufacturer parts warranty to what is offered by the manufacturer. Unfortunately this pump failed after the labor warranty and Manufacturer warranty had expired. We intend to provide the highest quality parts and supplies to the homeowner. We stand behind our warranties and products as specified in the contracts. In this particular case it was not something we could get covered under warranty and would cost the owner to repair."

We recently moved into a 1978 home, and noticed from the first night that we would not be able to sleep due to excessive popping/banging sounds coming from the ductwork located in the floors below our master bedroom and bath. The noise is most prominent when the furnace is heating up or ramping down, as the metal duct expands and contracts (pops). We had a new high-efficiency furnace installed but that did not eliminate the banging sound, it only reduced the severity by having a more even heat flow through the ducts. We finally agreed that we would need to call a specialist in ductwork, and finding one is no easy task. There are a million "HVAC" companies, however most that we found are limited to furnace/AC installation or duct cleaning. We stumbled across Dan's Top Notch, they've got sheet metal in their name so we figured they would be a good bet. They sent a team out to our house for an inspection and to do some work to address the situation. They pulled drywall off the garage ceiling to access the ductwork, and they found some areas where the ducts were not even connected, and loose fitting in other places, causing the metal to bang against itself. The ducts were not properly sealed or insulated either. The team sealed and insulated the entire main run above the garage, and at the end of that day of work we were fairly confident the problem had been corrected. However in the ensuing nights, my wife and I again could hear the unwanted noise; it was quieter this time but when you are trying to sleep, even the smallest noise is quite disturbing. We called Dan's back again, and had them come out to look at the duct lines leading from the main run to the bath and master bedroom. They pulled off more drywall and discovered even more sloppy ductwork installed by the home builders. The builders used the wrong type of ducting on the main run (heavier duct meant for vertical runs was used horizontally), and the sub runs had just metal sheets wrapped into a tube with a single screw every 2 feet to hold it together - none of it had been sealed or insulated. Heat had been escaping through these malformed runs and heating the interior floor instead of our living space, as well as allowing for the torturous expansion/contraction sounds. They replaced two sub runs with flex duct to eliminate any possible noise from these runs. Again they tightened more loose areas on the main run, and secured the vent piping near the furnace from possible vibration. The popping noise is now reduced greatly enough through the master bedroom and bath vents that my wife and I can sleep through the night. Dan's technicians were able to look into the duct soffit and see that the rest of the main run on the other half of the house has similar issues, and indeed we can hear the same noises in the office and family room. At some point we may need to repair or replace the entire ductwork system. But the work that these folks did has allowed us to rest a lot easier and we are very thankful for their expertise. Joe in particular was very professional and extremely patient in listening to us and with us to isolate the taunting noises. I will definitely be calling Dan's Top Notch in the future to remedy the remainder of our duct issues.

The technician Kyle arrived early for the job and was very personable. He did an excellent professional job, explaining how setting the thermostat in a certain way would actually make the A/C system work a little easier. He also showed me an air filter location I didn't even know about and removed the filter, which was completely clogged. He also disassembled the gas fireplace, cleaned the class, and re-seated the ceramic logs in the positions they should have been in originally. Overall, the service was money well spent and certainly worth the price. We would definitely recommend this company to anyone else seeking HVAC service.

Everything they did was excellent. I had received names for three other contractors and there price was over $10,000. Two out of the three estimated for a separate heat pump and furnace. They other said I didn't need it. Dan's price was half that cost.

"Thank you for the opportunity to work with you on your new heat pump system. It was a pleasure. I would encourage you to call Janeanne in our service dept. and join in our maintenance program, this can help to promote long life and continued ongoing efficiency of your system as well as keeping all manufactures warranties intact. Thank you again and feel free to call and ask questions. Dan."
