On March 2, 2013 the owner came to our home to discuss the hardscape and landscaping work we desired. We were very impressed with his knowledge and the statements he made about the quality of his work. He also stated he would be onsite to oversee the work being done.
We are disappointed that John was never onsite during the work. There was lack of communication between John and his employees. The workers were very conscientious and hard-working, but it was apparent the scope of work had not been communicated to them. On numerous occasions, I had to explain and show the workers what we wanted done. It appeared that the rough sketch given to us when John first visited our home was the only instructions they received. They were not aware of the type of material to be used or the exact dimensions of the sidewalk/paver area and the landscaping beds.
The stamped concrete sidewalk turned out very nice and was completed as promised. However, the flagstone walkway/patio is unacceptable. Our desire was to be able to roll the trash can over the pavers to the gate, but it is impossible to do as the flagstones are placed too far apart. Also, the area is not level. It rises up from the level of the stamped concrete sidewalk and is also higher in the center meaning it slopes toward the house instead of away from it.
We decided we were going to try to add more flagstone pavers ourselves so we could use the area as intended. However, when we removed the first two rows of flagstone and crushed river rock and pulled back the landscape fabric, we discovered the area was very uneven (almost like moguls). We were very surprised to discover the area had not been excavated nor had a proper base layer been installed. The landscape fabric had just been placed on top of the existing ground where the old brick pavers had been. The area had not been properly prepared prior to the brick being laid which is why we wanted it redone.
We called Ace Landscaping several times to ask that someone come out and look at the flagstone area. Our calls were ignored. Finally we were told by the office assistant that John wanted us to write a letter stating what we wanted him to do. As ridiculous as that sounds, we complied and wrote a letter and included photos of the area. The letter was sent June 16, 2013. We called once a week for several weeks and the office assistant gave us numerous excuses. No one has ever come out to see the inferior workmanship.
We have given John ample time and opportunity to fix the problem. We waited until now to provide a review as we hoped he would stand behind his work. This is an excerpt from his own website:
"Our business is doing high end custom work, their will be no corners cut. I have been doing paver jobs for well over 20 years. I have taken my job more than just a few steps above and beyond what the DIY shows, or the books will tell you."
Unfortunately, corners were cut on our job and the work is inferior to any DIY show!!
When we later had a problem with a crack that developed, John returned, repaired and sealed the area.
It has been a couple of years now and the work has held up well. We get lots of compliments on our entry way and a lot of comfortable use from the backyard patio.
