Hung Nguyen did a great job and was very professional. He is a craftsman. He did the tear out of old carpet and plywood and installed new white oak hardwood to match existing hardwood flooring. Then he sanded and stained entire floor to match. He picked out the new hardwood so the grain would match existing. He was very accommodating on our schedule and very clean.

We recently purchased this SE Portland 4-Square, and the fir floors upstairs in 3 bedrooms, hallway, and stairway needed re-finishing. I got 3 bids, but what convinced me to go with Royal was because Hung (the owner and refinisher) was the only one who noticed and took the time to tell me about the floors downstairs. They are new oak floors that the previous owners put in right before they put the house up for sale. He said that the floors didn't have enough finish on them! At first I thought he was just trying to sell me more work, but upon questioning him, I realized he was right, and what he pointed out was something I had been wondering about myself. You could actually feel some of the grain of the wood. He also pointed out that there were some waves in the wood and he said the temperature in the house was not maintained after the floors were put in, which caused the slight waving. His attention to this detail gave me the confidence that he was an expert and would apply this attention to detail to the floors upstairs. Also, his bid turned out to be the lowest, even though this was not my motivation for hiring him!
Hung did an excellent job. The floors look amazing. Even the stairs, which turned out to have more staple and tacks in the carpeting he removed than he had ever encountered before, look great. The job was done on time, and Hung is extremely friendly and great to work with. He even hauled away 3 large bags of construction trash! I would definitely hire him again.

I cannot say enough good things about Hung's work. He is an absolute professional in every way and his work looks like that of a very experienced and skilled finisher. His dedication to quality shows in his knowledgeable demeanor, his meticulous work ethic and--perhaps most importantly--the finished product.
We contacted Royal Hardwoods through a recommendation from a good friend. Hung responded by stopping by, looking at the floors, listening to our needs for the job and filling out a bid all in one visit. He suggested some excellent ideas for fixing minor issues with the floor that we had not even though of. After comparing bids with three others, we decided to go with him.
Hung started and finished the work on the days he scheduled, and he showed up early each morning. He finished the work quickly (3 days) but not so quickly that we were worried about drying times overlapping between finish coats. There was a period of three more days after the final coat was applied that we (and our pets) had to stay somewhere else due to the fumes being so strong that it burned our eyes and noses. I have read that Swedish finishes can take up to 30 days to fully cure depending on heat, humidity, air exchange, etc., but I felt the odor had dissipated sufficiently after three days. I would personally recommend leaving at least week of time away from the house for the work to be done, the floors to dry and for the fumes to dissipate. But this would ultimately depend on the square footage and whether or not the floors to be refinished are in high or low traffic areas. I should also mention that there was almost zero wood dust present when we returned home--not sure how he managed that, but what a nice surprise.
The end result was a completely beautiful and new looking floor with a very even surface/texture and rich color for both types of wood.
All of the floor corners and edges were super straight and even textured as well. He used two (maybe three) coats of Swedish type finish for the floors which was recommended to us as the best and most durable finish by many friends. I believe this is his and quot;defaultand quot; finish.
To tell the truth, I am not sure if writing a positive review is much required to keep new customers coming for Hung's work--I am certain that the verbal recommendations of happy customers alone sufficiently drive his schedule.
Thanks for the great floors!

Hung showed up when scheduled to give me a bid, and when I accepted the bid a few days later he showed up when he said he would to begin the work. I had a living room, dining room and hallway of oak, and a TV room with a parquet style of wood. I had already moved all the furniture out before he got here. He replaced some wood where stains were too deep to sand out. He went over the parquet four times to get the stain since repairing the parquet really isn't possible. He got the sanding done in one day, did some sort of chemical treatment on the second day and then completed the job the third day. The floors look beautiful.
Due to the toxic nature of some of the chemicals, I had to stay somewhere else for the couple of days the solution was curing on my floors.
The day after he left the job (and after I paid him) I went into my basement where I saw something on the floor in lines that paralleled the sub-flooring planks. I feared that it was the same chemical he'd be applying, and I was worried about how to clean it up -- I didn't know whether it could be swept or vacuumed or mopped. I called him and he came back the next day, recognizing it as just dirt and dust that had accumulated between the sub-flooring boards and that had just dropped to the basement floor when the sander vibrated the floor. He brought in his vacuum cleaner and ten minutes later my basement was clean and he was gone.
Hung is extremely knowledgeable and even passionate about hardwood floors. He showed me and told me things about my floors I'd never seen. For example, he showed me that the wood in one area was of a different kind than everywhere else, meaning that there had been a vent in the floor that had been removed. He also has an impish sense of humor. By the way, he has a pretty strong accent, but he doesn't let that stop his gregarious nature.
A relative needs some floor work, and I've recommended Hung to her.

We have used Royal Hardwoods many times for our house remodeling business. He (Hung) is the most consistent, careful and detail oriented flooring person we have used. I highly recommend him.

They did an amazing job with the floors. I took a vacation and gave these guys the keys and when I came home everything was perfect. And the floors have worn incredibly well over the last few years. I couldn't be happier. And they were priced lower than other bids by quite a bit.

Hung did an amazing job. First of all, he worked me into his busy schedule so that I could have the floor done while on vacation. When I returned I couldn't tell he had been there. The house was spotless, cleaner than when I left. The floor has never looked better. All of the dents, and water damage are gone. I'm a perfectionist and he exceeded my expectations on all levels. I almost hired someone double the price, and am so glad I didn't. I highly recommend him.

He was on time and did excellent work and was the best quote we got. He was recommended to me and since I have recommended him to 3 or 4 people and everyone has been equally satisfied and impressed. Work consisted of repairing 4 or 5 holes (3 over 1 sqr ft. and 2 smaller) and refinishing 500 - 600 square feet.

It was excellent service, price, and results. It was very easy to work with Hung, although he does have a strong accent so it was necessary to listen very carefully.
