The former owners of my house had an old alarm system on a subscription from Sonitrol. I bought a new alarm system from a different company that was all cellphone and wireless-based, so the old alarm system was not of any use. It still lit up but I didn't do anything about it for 18 months since it wasn't really causing any problems. Then once in a while the on light would go on on one of the front panels and the unit would start chirping. So this made me realize I needed to get rid of the old alarm system. I called a home security company and an electrician and both said they don't do that kind of thing. Then I called Sonitrol and they said they could remove it but I would have to pay for the service call since I am not a customer of theirs. I said that was fine. So on the day of the appointment to have it worked on a technician from API came. It turned out he had worked on the system at my house several years ago. He removed the controller and front panels. He also removed a transformer in the garage that was the power source for the alarm system. The wires to the sensors and such are behind the walls and not practical to try to remove, but now I know there is no voltage going to any of the wiring in the alarm system, so I no longer need to worry about any electrical hazard with this obsolete alarm system anymore.
The charge was very reasonable and he did an excellent job.

Okay, until it came to to revisit them, when they simply disappeared. told that they could not call back 'today', but would call 'tomorrow'. Tomorrow came and went. Don't sign up with these folks. They are the proverbial 'tar baby'. you can't get loose.
