Just had my 1906 house in Rose Village painted by Danny Eyster, owner of Advanced Painting. Got his card from Sherwin-Williams on 99th in Hazel Dell. He came in with a low bid of $1800 (vs up to $4500 from 3 others that bid on the job) which included pressure washing, some caulking, and painting 3 colors (body, trim, front door). He offers no warranty (most offer at least two years). The house looks nice. He did an okay job but definitely not a great job (caulking missed in some places, bleeding paint in others, trampled my plants, painted over dirt in a few places, did not supply me with an extra gallon of each color as requested and for which I would pay, etc).
When the job was finished, Danny presented me with the final bill which surprised me with an extra $300 for 4 additional itemized parts of the job, two of which I disputed. One of the disputed items was for using the body color on the header that runs around the front porch when it should have been trim color, and subsequently having to repaint it; the other was for priming the 3 posts on the front porch even though this was a known part of the job when he submitted the bid. Not only that, but I had reduced the color scheme from 4 colors to only 3 colors, and reduced the amount of taping-off he would have to do by my decision to keep the corner boards the same color as the body. He would not take any of this into account. The $300 charge would not break the bank for me or, probably, for him. But Danny’s obstinate refusal to even consider going halfway, or partway, on it was unreasonable. I paid him the extra $300. For a negotiated reduction of $150, I would have been a happy camper. Instead I am left with a bitter feeling toward him and his company. Wonder if that is worth it to him? If you consider using his service, which I would not recommend, do NOT let his sweet demeanor fool you. My advice is to detail the color on every single little nook and cranny, or watch out… you WILL be charged extra, even if it is a miscommunication error and even if it is his fault. Buyer beware. Caveat emptor.
There was some caulking that had been agreed on that didn't get done. I caught it during the inspection, and Danny just had forgotten that we agreed upon him doing it.. Danny got his equipment back out and made sure the job was done correctly and as we had discussed. I thought this showed integrity on his part.
Thanks Danny for the great work... again.
Danny and his crew worked with my schedule and the weather to make sure the job was well done. They spent the necessary hours to get the job done right. My wife and I LOVE the way the house turned out. Thank you Danny, the house looks great.
