t was a big disappointment as well as causing heartache for the family.

The physical set up and presentation to the public on site was done in a professional manner.

This individual was referred by an Estate Sale Service that was unable to fulfill its contract.

The family did not receive all the appraisal information prior to sale and were unable to see all the items sorted by the service prior to sale. The set up was not fully completed for the family to do a walkthrough to pick out momentos for purchase from everything to be sold. Some items were sold to  prior to the sale while set up was being done.

The advertisement for the estate sale should have run Thursday through Saturday.  They failed to get it in on time so the sale wasn't advertised before the sale. It ran Saturday (the day of the sale) and Sunday.  There was no prior notification to collectors or dealers or other interested parties.  Because of the lack of advertising the turnout was not only less that it would have been but the number of collectors and dealers who would have had the knowledge and interest in antiques and vintage were not there.

The second day of the sale items were discounted 50% and also negotiated without prior approval of the family.  A "free" pile was set up also without approval of the family.  Family items that would have been purchased by family because they were being discounted were gone. It is unknown how many vintage items or antiques were sold at half value.  The paper records were minima.  Very few receipts to describe items sold and what they sold for.  While understood for small items - this also was the norm for large items, furniture, collectibles, vintage - items of what would have been higher value. There is no idea what happened to some things as there is no record of sale.  Back up records for the sale were almost non existent. No way to tie in money to items sold.

Family was discouraged from attending the sale, but when one showed up she did attempt to make purchases before specific items that were discounted and negotiated down were gone.

The day after the sale family had to clean up to pick up after those who put the sale on.  There were empty water bottles and debris that were left on the ground and on the floor in the house.

The end result is that the family lost items important to them because the preliminary set value was too high for that person to pay and then the value was lowered and purchased by someone on the second date of the sale. There is no way to calculate the loss due to lack of buyers, discounting, negotiating prices ,and  free pile. Nor the personal loss because items the family members were unable to purchase.

My advise - DO NOT sign a contract that takes away your right as family to take things from your own estate.  DO NOT sign a contract that keeps you out of your parents home while strangers are sorting through things you haven't seen yet.  DO NOT listen to an Estate Sale Service that would like you to stay away while they set up or put on the sale. If your parents were in the home forever, and never threw anything away - you darn well want to see EVERYTHING.  Before it is sold. DO, if family has to buy from the estate, handle any family sale transaction BEFORE signing a contract. After signing a contract, you have to pay a commission on top of buying the item from the estate.
