PARK PLACE DECKS

I purchased the lumber directly from the supplier ($4,500) and it was delivered on May 19, 2008. Mr. Weaver began work the next day. He worked only about 3 hours per day. He framed the deck and began laying the deck surface. After about 3 weeks he discovered the deck was not square. He reworked this problem and continued to lay boards. By then he had stopped showing up regularly. My husband and I decided to take a close look at the deck and discovered that it is at least two inches out of level (sloping back toward the house). We gave Mr. Weaver the opportunity to fix the problem and he promised he would but he basically stopped showing up to work on it. After two more weeks of this we fired him. He refunded the $1500 that we had paid him so far for labor. At this point (late July) we have had 3 deck contractors here to give us bids to repair and finish the deck and it is going to cost several thousand dollars to level the deck, add additional supports that should have been part of the framing, re-install joists that are either too high or too low, etc. We will likely have to replace quite a lot of lumber that Mr. Weaver ruined or cut wrong. Other contractors have informed us that the framing he did is not structurally sound and doesn't meet code.
