A-1 GENERAL CONTRACTORS INC

What a wonderful way to ask this question. It went like a jagged rock on broken glass. Top floor bathroom broke an under sink hose with nobody home. Upon arrival, we had 2" water upstairs, raining on main floor with 2" water and 4" in basement. Service Pro came in for initial cleanup. Very satisfied with them. Insurance put us in a hotel for a week for the drying and dehumidifying. Upon return, we found A1 Construction and scheduled an interview. The owner seemed qualified, experienced and eager to do the job. Insurance guaranteed the work, so we went with him. Mistake number one. We were told it was a three week project barring unforeseen issues. Agreed, insurance once again paid for me, my three sons, my mother and my cat to take up residence in a hotel. An extended stay, to be sure. But three weeks to effectively, a new home. We were ok with the inconvenience. After exactly 7 hours on the job, they extended the estimate by a week. No new issues, just didn't realize the extent of the damage. Seems that was what they should do before the estimate. Silly me. The owner stopped being involved almost immediately. Instead, he had to men who would be charitably characterized as experienced handymen types and a "project manager" named Angie. Perpetual battles over cost overruns, unscheduled changes, schedule changes, lies, days of no work being done & theft of property from within the home and garage, it turned from three to four weeks to FOUR MONTHS!!! Insurance would have happily placed us into a rental home rather than a hotel and saved cash. We would have been much happier with that experience as well. Oh well, at least we're returning to a "new" home. Ha! Ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha! Funny! Start with the floor, narrow strip hardwood had gaps in the end of the boards that was NOT covered by the baseboard or quarter round. That's more than 1 1/4" from the wall. Electrical outlets that were previously flooded were reused. Wiring was a mix of old and new. Lighting was not installed properly. Painting looked like it was performed by 6 year olds. Sloppy, horrible brush strokes all over. Ceiling moulding was original, not removed with care, installed sloppily and gaps filled with caulk then painted. Literally, the worst experience with a "professional" we've ever had. After we moved in we found missing jewelry, electronics, tools, power equipment, cutlery, etc. Seriously? Screw us and then rob us? Insurance settled the missing items and sued A1 for losses related to the time they were in control of the home. If I ever see this guy on the street, it will take a great deal of will power to not commit an act of violence. That's how bad this was. I've spent the last six years fixing the mistakes and incompetence. Still not done.
