He also repaired a firebox in the house that wasn't drawing properly. I love wood burning fires and something had gone wrong with the fireplace draw, making it impossible to enjoy a fire. He diagnosed the problem and fixed it.
He worked around October and November weather challenges and was here for long hours, including weekends whenever weather permitted to make sure the job got done before roof-leaking season.
He cleaned up the work area perfectly and his work (chimney and firebox) looks beautiful. And he coordinated with our roofer to get the roof tiles put back so I didn't have to be in the middle of trying to schedule things in a bad weather season where putting things back together was pretty important.
Oh, and one more thing. I mentioned our roofer had to remove tiles and put down tar paper to protect us. One Saturday in a very strong windstorm, some tarpaper got ripped off the roof, leaving us exposed in driving rain. I couldn't reach the roofer, so I called Robert for advice. He got in his truck, raced to get down to Seattle (from Snohomish) before dark, so it could be repaired same day. He got up on the roof in that wind and put new tar paper down and secured it. He is just so service oriented, as well as being an artist. I can't say enough about him.
He went above and beyond my expectations
Robert and his team came three times to complete our job. The first visit, they prepared the space and protected our floors, etc. They dismantled and removed the old hearth and fire place face. The time required for demo was done on a per hour basis and his team got the job done quickly.
The next visit, two of Roberts crew reconfigured the size and shape of the fireplace with block. Robert was here at the beginning and end of each day to ensure everything went smoothly. Robert finished and leveled the floor of our firebox so that the gas insert could be installed.
Once the insert was installed and the mantel ready, one of Robert's crew came back to install the ledge stone face on the fireplace. Again, Robert was here at the beginning and end of the two days that it took to complete. Finally, Robert came on a Saturday morning to clean the face and hearth.
While Robert and his crew were here, they were friendly and worked effectively. They offered information and solutions on other stone/brick work in our house, as well as for the maintenance and function of our chimney and new fire place. Ours was a small job done in several pieces, and Robert fit us in between several other jobs. He and his crew do good work and so they are busy. However, he still made us feel like we were an important customer.
Overall, Robert was not the most inexpensive contractor, but you get what you pay for. The finished product looks great. We appreciate the work and will use RC Masonry again in the future.
It took a while to get all of the permits in place, but Robert worked well with both the fireplace retailer (we installed a gas fireplace), and the team from puget sound energy. Those installations pushed the masonry work back until January, but Robert worked well with the timelines, and guiding us through the process.
His team came in and tapped off that part of the room, protecting the floor and rest of the room. The fireplace and planter turned out beautifully. We couldn't be happier with our choice to go with RC Masonry.
RC Masonry came highly recommended for the quality of their workmanship, and didn't disappoint in meeting that expectation. Problems with chimney were first noted in early winter, and RC Masonry provided stop gap protection to get through the winter until weather would permit the actual restoration work. We generally agreed it could wait until July or august. Due to a high volume of work at other jobs, our schedule was pushed into late Sept & early October. Work actually was performed over couple week period, with a day or 2 on one phase and a few days before next stage was performed (as was communicated about the overall schedule before they started). Nature of work creates some spray with particulate from structures being cleaned, but efforts were made to manage that and then do a good site clean up.
Would not hesitate to recommend RC Masonry.Robert explained in detail what they were going to do and then did the job exactly as explained. Robert, himself, spends much of the time working right along side his crew.
The results are even more beautiful than my wife and I expected. Our house has become the showpiece of the neighborhood. We've even seen a car drive past, stop back up, and take a longer look.
RC Masonry may not be the lowest bidder, but they might be the best. I'd retain again in a heartbeat.
around the fireplace. I first called a roofing company and they advised me to
contact a mason. I then called several chimney companies, who advertised
masonry as a service, for an estimate. I was troubled by the wide range of
explanations about the cause of leaks, their solutions on how to fix the leaks
and their price for fixing the leaks. When I called Robert he promptly came out
to the house. I appreciated his honest assessment and how strongly he stands by
his work. He explained that our chimney needed a full restoration. His bid was
on the higher side, however I was confident that I would be getting a higher
quality of work compared to the other companies. As soon as I accepted Robert?s
bid he took immediate action by wrapping the chimney to prevent any more water
damage to our ceiling. The chimney remained wrap until the spring when the
rainy weather ceased long enough for Robert to start the masonry work on the
chimney. During this period of time, when the chimney was wrapped, Robert
called to make sure that the wrap was working and no more moisture was
continuing to enter the house. He also remained in touch with me about his
schedule. Once the work began Robert and his crew were on time and they made a
great effort to keep the job site clean. The restoration took 3 days, plus a
couple additional visits for a final cleaning and waterproofing. Robert takes
great pride in his work and he delivers high quality craftsmanship. I highly
recommend Robert, as a mason who can meet any of your masonry needs.
