Hanson's Concrete

About us

We have been doing concrete work here for 30 years. I was born and raised here. I have a small crew and that I try and be on every job as needed, my crew is also very experienced, with many years working with me. We usually start and finish one job at a time. I like a down payment when we start, and balance when we finish the job, usually the same day we pour and finish the concrete.

Steve was great to work with through all phases.  He communicated, he was on time, he was responsive, he was patient with me through several changes in design direction, and the job looks great.  Completely satisfied and would highly recommend him.

Steve quoted a fair price, showed up when he said he would and got the job done quickly and well.  My neighbor, a general contractor, saw the end product and noted that it was an excellent job.  Steve was responsive, conscientious and easy to work with.

The whole experience was great.  He showed up on time and finished the work as scheduled (1 day prep, 1 day pour, and 1 day seal).  When he came out to quote he let me know what was possible and what my choices were for coloring, etc.  Then, he got me into the schedule very quickly, he started the next day after I agreed to the quote.  The new patio looks great and I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again if I decide to replace my driveway or have other concrete work done in the future.

Basically the initial work seemed to go fine.  June was very wet and Steve Hanson and many other contractors were backlogged trying to get jobs done.  But the old concrete got busted up and hauled away, new rebar was laid, new concrete poured and a border was colored and stamped around the edges.  We were pleased with how it looked.
As we lived with it, problems surfaced.  We had asked that a drain be place at the bottom of the drive to help keep water out of the garage, and that a speed bump type berm be placed at the top of the drive to divert water from the street and keep it from coming down the drive.  The drain was installed, but did not reach quite all the way across the drive.  It did extend the full width of the garage door, but still allowed water to pool up  and flood under a gate at the side of the house where we store our firewood and bicycles.  We were left to dig the trench to continue the drainage down the side of the house.  The berm at the top of the drive was even less successful.  It is not level, but has a dip which allows water to pour unimpeded down the drive. And it was not extended quite far enough on one side to hold back gravel from the parking strip in front of the house from being washed down too.  Another problem is the large concrete area in front of our entry.  A crack started to develop from one corner 4 weeks after the work was completed.  When I mentioned this to Steve and asked what could be done, his answer was that "concrete cracks", that he couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't and that there was nothing that could be done.  When I showed pictures I had taken as the concrete was being poured to our contractor who was doing other work at the house, he noticed that the concrete had been poured without tying and lifting the rebar, which prevents it from shifting and holds it in the center of the slab rather than resting on the bottom.  I don't know if handling the rebar properly would have prevented the cracking, but it seems possible.  The crack worked its way across the slab over the course of the summer and we now have a crack running the entire width of the patio right by the front door.  Not a hazard, but certainly not the look we were striving for.
Response from Hanson's Concrete
"I tried to use a speed bump type way to divert the water at the top of the driveway, telling them that it may not work very well, it's on a very sloped street going down a very sloped driveway, there's no way to stop the water unless you put in a channel drain across the top of the driveway. And the gravel is loose on a sloped next to the top of the driveway where a lot of the street run off goes through and brings it on the driveway. They need to build a retain wall to stop it, not a big one but something. That' was like that before I did any work there. The water comes off the street, It can't be stopped. Please!! Don't blame this on me. The steel doesn't need to be tied, we pick it up off the ground after we get some concrete around it. Some people should mind there own business if they don't know what there talking about. Cracks in concrete will happen, we try to put grooves where we think it will crack, but concrete doesn't always crack where we or anybody else want's them to. I can't control that. I say it over and over to people, I guess I alway's will. And you can't fix hair line cracks. They will never go away. I put in rebar steel, it won't separate. That's all you can do. If I could do more I would."

The overall appearance of this work is not very good. There are many discolorations and a few  long, thin , diagonal cracks that were evident in less than four weeks. Mr. Hanson responded to my inquiry about this matter that "there is nothing that can be done about it"
Response from Hanson's Concrete
"In my contract it states that I try the best I can to make the concrete look great, but when you are outside dealing with the elements, sun and shade you are most likely going to have a difference in color of the concrete. That's out of my control. It's not inside in a controlled temperature ect ! Sun at different times will create different colors. I tell everyone this, but either they don't listen or don't get it. I put rebar steel in all my concrete so that it wont separate, I put grooves in it for crack control, so that it will hopefully crack in the grooves. That's all I can do, I don't have control over it to not crack in other places. It's concrete, outside, on the ground, ground settles, trucks may drive on it, we have earthquakes, etc, I do the best I can, concrete is not completely controllable. It will not be perfect, If you want it perfect, call someone else, good luck."

Steve was great to work with, VERY professional, always on time and followed through with exactly what he said he was going to do. I received other bids, although Steve was not the lowest he was close. I went with him because of the great reviews and am glad I did.

We needed a cement floor poured in an outdoor building.  Steve had done our shed and barn years ago.  This job was smaller, but just as good as our larger job regardless of the size.  He even suggested we add re-bar due to the depth of the pour which is something the others bids did not suggest.  He poured to the exact height needed so when we added our rubber stall mats...everything was snug and level with the slightest angle to it so fluid or rain could wash out without pooling.  Awesome
job as always.  Thank You!!

I had him put it the contract that he would use rebar.  At the end of the day before the pour the rebar was there and the spacing seemed o.k.,but none of it was connected together with wire ties!  I called him that evening and he said it wasn't needed, but I told him he could not pour until the wire ties were in place.  On the day of the pour one of the workers said Hanson didn't even have ties(!), had no plans to use them until I called, and was ordered to find some somewhere and bring them in. The moral is, if you don't watch him he will probably cut corners anywhere he can.   Also the pour around a plastic case over a sewer clean-out was done sloppily and the lid had to be cut off and replaced, which I did at my expense since I never wanted to see his company again!

12/01/2012
Yes, after the rebar issue, I continued to oversee the job closely (as engineers will do) but still did not know about release agents that might have been used to prevent  the sewer clean-out cover from seizing in the concrete.  Overall the job looks great (I never said it didn't) and although it has only been 11 months no cracks have formed---hopefully with the rebar all inter-connected that will continue to be the case!  Maybe I am wrong, but it seems that concrete and painting have something in common.  They both can look great right when they're finished, but in the long run they are only as good as the prep work, swimming pools or not . . .
Response from Hanson's Concrete
"This job was done with great detail and supervision from the owner, a Engineer to give an idea how his mind may work. I did the job with his watching and commenting every minute about the entire job. Don't know how I could have done any better, he watched everything that was done. I never received a call about any problems. The job looked great. I had wire ties but don't use them often except around pools. He didn't say I had to after our discusion. Now he writes this 10 months later. Some people."

Within a week of accepting the bid, Steve and his crew arrived on time after a weather delay, removed the section of drive, dug the French drain,  laid a pipe and stone as specified in the statement of work and bid. All dirt and old concrete was hauled away.
On day 2 Steve and an experinced concrete finisher arrived. The concrete truck arrived within 45 minutes, the concrete was poured, with some minor splattering on the side of the garage but it was not removed. The pouring took about 45 minutes and the finisher worked the remaining part of the day to expose the aggate and did a good job. About half a wheel barrow of slurry remained from the truck and I was told it was dumped into the French Drain. I don't think this was an ideal place to dump it.
Steve was friendly, kept me informed as he worked (except for dumping the slurry) and I would recommend him.

Hire these guys!  We are delighted with the finished product. We had an old, exposed concrete patio that had cracked and settled, making it a giant step down from two doors to the surface.  We asked for two new sets of manageable steps, plus enlargement and reshaping of the old patio footprint as well as two new walkways.  We wanted the pathways to have a meandering look and the old, rectangular patio to have a more rounded edge. From the start, we got the personal attention of owner Steve Hanson.  When we called to get a bid, he came over right away.  As he began the project, he laid out the wandering pathways, making suggestions and working  with us closely to make sure they curved and moved where we liked them, making lots of small adjustments to get the right look and that drainage would be away from the house and the steps were manageable in size and height..  On the 2 days that he and his crew poured and stamped the walkways, he was very involved with them on the details, calling for adjustments here and there, almost as if it was his own place.  They did the patio on one day and the walkways next since we chose different stamped patterns and concrete colors for them. We wanted to make sure that the concrete showed lots of shading and mottling to mimic natural stone and Steve worked very hard to make us happy there, putting on a little of the final "release" color, then finally even blotting areas with a sponge and rag.  The result is fabulous and we are just extremely happy with our new backyard look.

To begin with, Steve Hansen answered the phone himself when I called for an estimate. Throughout the project, he readily answered email and phone calls. I cannot say the same for other companies who were not as accessible. He himself came to the house to estimate and discuss the project. What I liked was that he had photos of actual jobs he had done, and not just a brochure and color chips. The finished project is very beautiful and looks like the picture. There was a large crew that came out to dig up old concrete and grass, and then another crew to pour the concrete and stamp it. There was a tremendous amount of labor involved, I can appreciate why the cost is high. The stamp job was well done, the lines are straight and the effect on the steps was great, looks like pavers/stones rather than cement. There was a nice effect with the release color and then the glossy sealer. There was a glitch when an employee of Steve's came to cut two indentations to prevent cracks. The gloss was blotchy in places after that. Steve personally fixed it, and it looks impressive. We are very pleased and would use him again.

BEAUTIFUL Job! Steve was a pleasure to talk with, helped us with ideas for the finished product, very prompt in turnarounds of questions and proposal. I never thought I would get so excited about a driveway, but WOW, it changed the look of the house.  I would highly recommend Hanson Concrete. You'll be happy with the finished product, and they are a very professional firm.

Steve Hanson prepared a bid to replace my driveway, which had root damage.  Came out promptly,  brainstormed with me on ideas for repairing my porch steps and adding a small front porch also,  and sent me a bid promptly.  After I had looked at my other bids,  I called Steve and indicated we wanted to have him replace our driveway.   The crew came as expected,  and Steve communicated with me during the entire project,  if questions came up,  and they did a great driveway/porch/step job, and clean up as well.   He was very honest about the pros and cons of different decisions I had to make,  would give his recommendation, but left the final decisions up to me.   I was happy with the result and have already recommended him to others.

Steve was quick in coming out and giving us a quote. He had some great ideas and steered us in the right direction in choosing where to use stamped concrete and why it wouldn't be the best choice on a steep driveway.

Once we made our decision, he told us it would be about 2 weeks, but was able to start the job sooner which was a big plus with the weather changing.  His crew was very professional, courteous and careful of existing landscaping. They removed all the old concrete and set the forms on day one and poured and did the stamping on day two. They did a wonderful job with the walkway, making it easy for my mother to use her walker on. They were also able to address some old problems with the driveway.

We are very happy with the final results. Using a combination of broomed concrete with a stamped border on the driveway and matching the border and walkway gives us a safe as well as wonderful looking entry.
