Urban Oasis Design & Construction LLC
About us
Urban Oasis focuses on design solutions that tie our clients’ homes into their landscape and that reflect details from architecture of the home itself. We begin with a free one-hour in-home consultation with one of our designers. During this meeting, we introduce our company, get a sense of the space and gain a clearer understanding of our potential customer’s needs and aesthetic preferences. Following this meeting, we send a design proposal for the client’s scope of work. After measuring the project area, shooting grades and taking lots of photographs, we begin design by exploring the functionality of the space as it exists with an eye for improving layout, flow and usability. During our first design meeting we typically present two to three design concepts. Working with our clients, we determine the best layout for their desired usage and consolidate ideas from the initial conceptual plans into one unified design. Once construction begins, our designers oversee the construction to assure that the design intent is clear and carried through the project. Trevor oversees the daily construction activity. In contracting us to design your project, you are also contracting us to build it. We do not take on design-only projects; however, we are happy to work with you to phase your work and, where appropriate, to find portions of the work that willing customers may choose to do themselves. We are also available for projects that do not need design work as the preliminary stage to construction.

The economy then picked up and housing market accelerated, and the company apparently got extremely busy with other contracts (I suspect for builders etc.). She worked very hard to get structural designs of the rooftop yet it was I that paid the design engineer extra money ($560) for these designs that were forwarded to her. In full disclosure, we have been able to keep those.
Just to keep things in perspective, the initial contact was made in March 2013. After several communications back and forth (with sporadic prolonged delays in between), the final construction contract was sent to me in August 2013 (5 months), for installation of planters and plants in October 2013. Not only was it so late, the proposal for installation was more than double the budget, roughly >$16,000. That excluded drip irrigation. So, we spent the entire year without any landscaping and we ended up with a proposal that was double the budget with less plants than we wanted. We chose not to go ahead with the proposal and were billed for the design (the cost listed here) that we paid immediately.
Independently, in March 2014, we took her design to the nursery to purchase the plants. The majority of the plants listed in her original proposal were not to our taste and as it turns out they would not have lasted (according the the nursery) had we gone along with what was listed in the $16K+ project. So, we ended up choosing our own preferred plants, ordered our own planters and designed our own deck with beautiful results. The rough cost of all of this would be less than $2000. Therefore, in retrospect, I am quite disappointed with the services, and would not recommend this company to an individual client. It seems that if you are a builder or a big corporation, it would be worth the risk, but this particular vendor was a a waste of money for our needs.
"I am happy to hear that you were able to complete your project to your satisfaction, and am confident that the information you received on the structural engineering and weight calculations was helpful to you. I did spend more time than was included in the design fee meeting the structural engineer and working out the calculations for the large planters we intended to use to divide the space. A significant portion of the cost for us was getting large containers (that were selected and agreed upon) from out of state (including shipping fees), using light weight soil, and getting all of these elements onto your roof deck via crane (rather than tracking dirt through your home or requiring you to be home throughout the construction process). Give the electrical lines and other elements (closing the alley for a time), this became a very expensive process. While it is always less expensive to do a project yourself, in this case, there was a more significant cost difference based on our reliance on the use of the crane and the large planters that were selected and agreed upon by you, as they were not available locally. At the end of the process, we did propose a design that fell within your construction budget; however, you declined to move forward. We are glad to hear that you are enjoying your roof deck and hope that the design process were went through together was helpful to you in understanding the limitations of what could safely be added to your deck. We wish you a beautiful summer in which to enjoy your deck."
"[Member Name Removed], It was a pleasure working with you. We are happy to hear that you are enjoying your new entrance! Best, Carrie"
